Anywhere for catching bowfin around Charleston

Is there anywhere around Charleston to catch bowfin/mudfish? I love catching those toothy hard-fighting buggers.

Might be tough to find a local spot since everywhere is FLOODED! Chantal’s remnants won’t help either.

Somewhere in the Cooper river or in lake Moultrie ought to hold some mudfish. Watch out for the bassholes and the party barges, as always.

Goose Creek Reservoir, and the Ashley River (Summerville).

Edisto River

Goose Creek Reservoir…lots of mudfish there.

Be sure to check out this usgs site before embarking on your mudfish quest.

I think the Edisto needs to be 5 ft or less at Givhan’s Ferry for the fishing to be worthwhile. The GCR is a safe bet and has some nice largemouth and shellcracker if you’re interested. No shortage of 8-12 ft toothy lizards though.

I’ve never caught one personally but my family has a rich history of Mudfish fishing, my grandma , grandpa, and dad fished for them exclusively on Back River/ Freshwater bushy park, from the landing all the way to cypress gardens. They always used mud minnows or small live bream.

GCR looks good, though the gators concern me, but i suppose that’s anywhere in fishing in the lowcountry. Coming from the upstate, i’m not too familiar yaking with gators. Anything to rememeber other than no stringers in the water?

the gators in GCR are not afraid of people… I had a BIG 12-footer come visit me in my kayak, I even smacked it on the head with my paddle and it didn’t even submerge, matter of fact it followed me all the way back to the landing and actually came out of the water and followed me up the ramp about 6 feet… Quickest load of a kayak in my history… bring a buddy if you go and possibly a gun… I’ll never put a kayak in GCR again… powerboat yes… kayak no thanks.

Thanks for the input Nikon. That’d be pretty intimidating. Somebody must have been feeding that big lizard.

I may just stay salty rather than side trip for bowfin. Glad you folks reminded about the size of the lizards down in your lowcountry reservoirs.
