April 1st and 2nd

Took the wife, the 8 year old and the 6 year old out on the Wet Dream this weekend with intentions of hitting a couple lake restaurants, some crazy swimming and sandy beach action with some fishing in between.

April 1: Fished artificials from the back of Hollow to the gap (on the way to Frayed Knot). Caught a couple off the points at the gap. Later in the evening fished DR’s in Hurricane Cove while hanging with friends, only a catfish on cut bait to show.

April 2: Started in Ballentine. Humps and points on fire, caught 4, lost one. Fished 11:00-1:00. Big water and Spence didn’t produce. Moved to another island and the bite was on fire. Close contours humps and points produced nearly 100% of the time. Fished 1:30-3:00 and 6:30-7:00. Caught 8 and lost 1. Highlight was a having a triple hook-up resulting in 4 boated fish. On the Triple we had 2 on the u-rig, 1 on the yum and 1 on a 20’ yozuri. The downside of the day was that I lost BOTH of my dang Umbrellas. Both user errors.

do you have a retriever for your u-rigs? if not, you definitely need to get one or two

I barely have to use my retriever any more though. i found that when they snag, i immediately loosen to drag all the way, DONT try and jerk on it to make it release, it only makes it dig in deeper. i get all my other rods in while it free spools and then i back all the way up and get on the opposite side and then tighten the crap out of the drag and rip up. 90% that does the trick. the only time i usually have to use a retriever is if i get snagged on something vertical, like a tree. then i usually end up breaking a leader or straightening a quick clip, both are much better than loosing a complete rig.

anyway, maybe you already knew all that but, but either way, im sure someone else reading it may find it beneficial.

I did Mechanic. One of my u-rigs was pre-rigged with cable so no breaking that. I actually backed down on it and tried pulling from every angle before resulting in popping the 30lb momoi diamond line. The other rig that I lost I grabbed the spool and it popped instantly. Shouldn’t have done it cuz when it snagged so did the other and I got it off by backing down and pulling from opposite side. I’ll get some new ones.

I don’t. My dad did and he was always the u-rig man. I’ve always liked live bait but just bought some stuff to play around with last year. I’ll be getting one when I get new rigs.

mine has paid for itself 10 times over…i used paracord on mine, and wrapped everything around a small bouy. that helps keep it stowed nicely and it also helps if someone accidentally drops the whole thing in the water, its happened on my boat before.

Just picked up 2 more U-rigs 9 bait. 1 pre-maid and 1 imma build myself. Didn’t have time to look for a retriever. Did go ahead and get a heavier 7’ net for bait too.
