So i just got a boat and I have noticed that there are several islands with trees in the area that appear to have no human activity on them. I was thinking about camping on Long island or Front Cole’s island behind Folly (I got the names from Google Earth). How do I tell if these are private or public? Just go for it and plead ignorance? I know that some islands have developed a reputation for being a hangout but I was looking for something that isn’t full of people. I posted this in this forum because it is an inshore question and I wasn’t sure where else to stick it.
Coles island is owned by someone I know without mentioning his name. I don’t know who owns Long Island but most islands or hummocks are owned by someone.

Lots of people camp on Cat Island up the Wando just beyond the 41 bridge on the left. Depending on time of year, you’ll have company out there possibly. Be respectful, clean up after yourself and you’ll probably never have problems. Bring your own fire wood too.
Or you can ask Bonzo to borrow the keys to Morris Island…
Find the GIS to find if it has a TIN and you can look up the owner. OR ask forgiveness…
Most islands I know on the Folly River are owned by someone. Wouldnt attempt unless you are absolutely sure or have the permission of the landowner. Not worth the risk.
If you do pick one to camp on, be super careful in the Warm weather months. Rattlers find their way to these Islands and will seek a source of warmth as the night cools. Also if you have a bait bucket don’t be surprised to see that a coon or two has eaten it all during the night. Or worse they’ve eaten the crabs you caught while gigging that you were going to have for breakfast.

You Learn something knew everyday. I didn’t know rattlesnakes would even get near saltwater.
Some of the biggest Rattlesnakes you will ever see, are on Sea Iles!

We were in St. Helena’s sound cobia fishing and had a rattle snake swim right past the boat, head and tail up. I had a DNR agent say the sometimes get swept up in the tide while searching around the marshes for rats, rabbits and the like. Then end up on our barrier Islands. The second biggest one I’ve personally seen was on Otter Island.

If you’re looking for a saltwater place to camp, I’d stick to Capers Island. http://www.dnr.sc.gov/mlands/specregshp.html
