Are Manta Rays good eating??

Don’t want to find out but, saw one clear the water twice off Baypoint on way in to Pt Royal Sound Thursday.

That thing was HUGE!!

I’ve eaten skate many times in Europe. The flesh is kind of stringy, but it’s tasty. I have heard sometimes what is sold as scallops is actually ray wings cut with a cookie cutter.

We had a huge one breech right beside our boat in the ICW near McClellanville one day. We were rolling along around 25 or so mph when this thing came up right beside the boat. It was at least 6’ wide. If it had come in the boat it would have killed someone. I’ve heard of eating stingrays but never heard of eating a manta.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?

Like all rays and skates, it can be eaten but the quality of the flesh is not great. Leave them be. And that is an old wives tale about scallops being cut out of stingray or skate wings. In over 30 years in the industry I have never seen it. Also skate wings or a fine dining item and they are in high demand, so why would somebody waste skate wings by cutting them up to make them look like scallops.
