Are Trout Not Good Fishing When Winds Are Strong?

Went out today and that darn storm came in and the wind was extremely strong. Are trout not good fishing when the wind is really strong? Thanks!

They have a large swim bladder and seem to turn off when the pressure changes fast. I’m assuming that is why.

They seem to have trouble casting and anchoring the boat in strong winds:smiley:

For me, the wind is definately a challenge. I personally pay more attention to water clarity. Clear water is usually on the lee side…but that means chunkin dead into the wind. I will plan a trip to get out of the wind more times than not. and of course, low tide in smaller creeks or creeks with bluffs or trees will hide you pretty good too. That, and the low profile at low tide often can get you"under" the wind as well. All that being said, I did a little scouting in nw wind to 20 knots, with gust to thirty. The wind was on me…but the bite was good. Go figure. Most bites under the cork with DOA, and a few on a hard bait. All on artificial. Go figure…

well said GR.

there are some places near some well used ramps in charleston that have gigantic mcmansions. they provide some nice wind screen.

100% agree with G.R. I had a trip yesterday and the wind got to the point of being very aggravating after about 10 AM, but the trout were aggressive on the main river in 3-6 feet of water using flukes and boot tail grubs on a 1/4 oz. jighead. As G.R. stated, water clarity is more of an issue , and the water never got dirtier than 18" visibility. I’ve caught some of the largest trout of my life during dramatic weather changes; mostly in smaller protected creeks though. After this cold front, the trout bite will die on the big waters around here, but the deep hole creek fishing should be INSANE if you find the schools.
