That general area is my old stomping ground. East of Clayton the Chattooga has both stocked and wild sections, SC license will cover you (below the NC state line). West, the Tallulah is real popular with the kill-n-grill crowd. Can be a bit overwhelming on weekends, but the river itself is very beautiful. Moccasin Creek right there on the lake is a popular spot for stockies, but can be a bit of a cluster on weekends. I lived there 16 years and never fished it, but I hiked up there a few times.

If wild trout or brook trout or hike-ins are your thing, I could share another spot or 2 privately if you’re interested.

Going to be taking a 4wt with me, what sort of flies should I try?

I’m a big fan of a yellow stimulator with a pheasant tail or hare’s ear dropper. Elk hair caddis or Adams will perform. Black and green wooly buggers. Peach egg patterns for the stockies. Various caddis and mayflies will pop off all day, but the fish aren’t generally too selective. Sometimes near dark there will be a fair hatch of pale mayflies and a light cahill or sulphar will work; but honestly an Adams will probably work OK too.

Coleman river off the tallulah can be good also, fly water only. Dukes creek has a few monsters in it but it can be technical as they are wise ol fushes. Reservation only, limited to 12 anglers I believe, and is $2 to park. Call Smithgall woods. Prob 30 min from Clayton
