What do y’all think? I know that wasn’t taught in my history lessons in high school.
I always found humor in the fact that one of the worst housing projects in North Charleston was named after him.
Pitchfork Ben- spawn of the devil-not.
revisionist history could make many of our founders into racists, terrorists etc.
I mean this guy was completely ignored in my history class and I went to bishop England. (Well I may have been asleep in class haha). But anyhow, I find it especially ironic that he was complicit in the kidnap and murder of a state legislator and yet there is a monument to him on the state Capitol grounds. Really? A murdering, racist, white supremacist, terrorist (for his paramilitary role in trying to overthrow the mostly republican government) has a monument on Capitol grounds? Color me shocked.

I agree but most of them didn’t murder people. I don’t automatically fault everyone in our history for owning a slave at some point in time, but murder and lynching crosses the line from prejudiced to vile.
why was he prejudiced? his beliefs were not uncommon or un popular for the times.
to study history and understand it, it has to be read in period context- not in books written 50 years later.
things that were legal and accepted back then are now illegal and considered immoral- and vice versa.
murder- the taking of a human life without lawful cause- those lawful causes have changed drastically over the years, killing for honor, revenge and stealing horses were once acceptable but now would get you a ride on ole sparky.
just because someone’s behavior doesn’t fit into our modern view of acceptable, doesn’t make it wrong.
Nah, murder is still wrong unless you are a moral relativist. Just because his beliefs may have been common doesn’t make them right no matter what time period it is. Killing someone because they are black is still murder wether it happened today or a century and a half ago.
I’m not saying that Tillman was or wasn’t a horrible person, but I definitely don’t take anything Moredock says at face value… He is about as flaming liberal as you can get and would do anything to spark up controversy to gain readership.
Yeah I’ll admit terrorist is a bit of a stretch. But i was able to find a few more articles indicating the article in the city paper wasn’t very far from the truth.
Aren’t things bad enough without stirring to pot on History?
That was long ago an nothing can change it now.
Not to mention he was instrumental in the progress of Clemson University. For that alone, he should be vilified.
General Sherman has lots of statues . During the Civil War his men raped women and children and burned cities to the ground. Go figure?
Key West 1720 115 HP Johnson Saltwater.
Will Moredock, is in fact, an ultra-liberal d ouche bag, and a liar. I wouldnt wipe my ass with an article he’s written.
Both the post civil war southern U.S. history class I took in college and the books I’ve read about South Carolina history portray him as a pretty bad guy. Sure, he accomplished some things, but the guy was on the forefront of lynching and white supremacy. That’s a little different than saying “everyone was racist back then.”
lincoln and sherman committed war time atrocities comparable to hitler and his gang. their statues should come down and abe the traitor should be blasted off mt rushmore.
lincoln chose power for the government over constitutional rights of citizens and states.
sherman was disappointed he couldn’t eradicate the native americans- and he (**()ed sure tried to do so.
flame on but it’s the truth.
Really dock man? Comparing Lincoln to the holocaust? Surely you jest. That was a civil war and atrocities I’m sure we’re committed on both sides. After all, it was a war. The atrocities on both sides combined don’t hold a candle to the nazis.
The war was over when Ben Tillman continued his white supremacist murderous rampage.
Thanks jtsnake. Interesting perspective given that you actually learned about him in college. Where did you go to college? I’m presuming, perhaps incorrectly, that information would be withheld at Clemson or Winthrop.

millacd- i guess no one told you but that war is still ongoing- right now it’s a direct frontal assault by the govt against the citizens and the remnants of our rights and freedoms.
