Hello everyone, I’m wanting to try some wintertime fishing at Clarks Hill . I really don’t know how to use planet boards so I was thinking about some buck tail jigs I’m just not sure what weight to get , any suggestions. Thanks
I like 3/8 oz. butter bean head, they don’t sink as fast as a larger one. White is the best color, you can custimise them by adding green, red, black , pink, purple or yellow with Sharpie markers. a small stripe down the back. I also like to add an Ice fly trailer on a 12" dropper line tied to the buck tail hook. I have started making my own installing a larger hook! Smaller buck tails work well but are hard to cast unless you double up on them.Try to go on overcast, rainy day and look for sea gull working schools of fish. aproach the schools carefully try not to go in fast and close the last 100 yds with an electric motor. Good luck and God bless!
Good advice there Boatpoor! I never thought of using Sharpies to alter bucktails. When I do have occasion to throw or pull bucktails, I like to dress it up with a Mister Twister or plastic worm on the hook. Color doesn’t matter as long as it’s chartreuse.

Down lines and free lines blue backs all you need at the hill right now!!
If you have ever attached a red and white bobber to a fishing line, then you should be able to handle fishing with a planer board… Of course that assumes you have a trolling motor, a bait tank for live bait, and planer boards… If you have the basics, I’d strongly recommend you spend some time learning to use planer boards. They will increase your striped bass fishing success dramatically. The bucktails will catch some fish if you can find the fish and make enough casts and get the bait in the right depth and rate of retrieve. Better yet, cast some alabama rigs for even better results. or learn to troll some umbrella rigs. Go with someone that trolls umbrella rigs though before you jump into that. A few tips on u-rig set-ups, what to look for while trolling, how to fight the fish, and how to get your u-rigs back when they get hung up will greatly increase your confidence in the technique and propel you to much more successful outings.

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
