artificial reefs

Would a 20 ft. Bulls Bay boat be seaworthy enough to fish the nearer artificial reefs? It has Garmin electronics and a radio.

On a calm day it would be ok for the Nearshore Reef.

Thanks.

Yes. People have been taking smaller boats out further for years. Travel with a buddy boat. I’ve been as far as the “ledge” in 19’ boat, but that was 30 years ago. Think about that…

Two more suggestions about your question. First begin with the Nearshore, get some experience and then move to the 60 or Capers, and beyond if you choose.

But pay close attention to the weather and wave forecasts, particularly changes to come while you are out. I too have been to the ledge in a 20’ boat, and even caught a lot of fish in it out there. But I’ve also spent five hours coming back in against a strong headwind and bad waves. And returning after dark in bad weather is something to either avoid or be prepared for.

Got2Go is a great fisherman who posts here and routinely goes to the Gulfstream, leaving we’ll before first light…in a Pioneer 197. My point is he has a wealth of experience that is arguably more valuable than boat length. And you can accumulate your own experience, just use caution along the way. And/or go with a buddy boat, as suggested.

I got out regularly when the conditions are right in a 22 bay boat. I also have my ditch bag with me which has flares, floating VHF handheld radio, PLB, water, knife, rope ect.

He must Increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30

Thanks for all the good advice.

We run offshore in my 22ft all the time. Just make a good plan. It’s always a good idea to have a buddy boat your first few times just in case. Feel free to hit me up whenever you make plans.
