just wanted to put the feelers out and see what kind of artificials/color combos people prefer, jig head color/size too. I’ve been having a bit of luck recently on small specks with a white Mr. Twister in the creeks around Folly, just wondering if anyone has any advice to target other species, etc.
I mostly use a 1/4oz jig with a mullet color (Smoky Shad for Zman, Sapphire Shine for Gulp) I will use a 1/8oz jig when fishing Trout Tricks

great, thanks so much. I’m going to grab a few different colors tomorrow and see if I have any luck. Does jig head color matter?
I basically use lighter colors in clearer water, darker colors in water with less visibility. For instance in the Gulp 3 inch Shrimp, which I fish a lot, I use natural in clearer water, New Penny in dingier. As for jigheads, I use unpainted. A while back I called Elite Series pros, Greg Hackney, Stephen Browning, and Kelly Jordan and asked them about this. Greg and Stephen use unpainted and Kelly uses painted only when he can exactly match the color of the jighead with the plastic.
As for size, I use 1/8th on smaller baits, such as the Gulp 3 inch Shrimp and TroutTricks, 1/4 on bulkier, such as Zoom Flukes. I am looking for a 1 foot per second rate of fall to create a reaction bite. Bob

very very good info Bob, so greatly appreciated. Today I tried the gulp sapphire shine on a 1/4 jig with some light line. Caught the skunk at the Pitt St. bridge with tide going out. But I really like the action on the gulp combo. And definitely will be trying the trout tricks
I’m new to artificials, so this is exciting for me…
98% of the time when fishing for reds I am using a Z-man paddlerz in “Houdini” color. It does it all; gin clear to chocolate milk.

Zman redbone paddlerZ and gulp shrimp 3" white with chartreuse tail are my favorites . I like using a 1/8th oz weighted flutter hook and also rigging the shrimp weedless hook with a 1/8 oz bullet weight .

Going to head out and get a few of those colors myself. I have had a lot of luck with the paddlerz in houdini and redbone. I usually use a red jig head, but will try the colorless. I have a question about the flutterhooks. I seem to have a hard time keeping zman baits in the bottom with the flutter hooks. Maybe I am using too little weight? I use the flutter hook a lot in the summer fishing flats for tailers. Thanks as always for advice and help.

I would try more weight that’s a new one on me . I have no problem using a 5" paddler and 1/8th oz flutter hook and getting them to stay down . I mostly use it in the grass chasing the trailers also and have no problem keeping it down . Try working it slower if it won’t stay on the bottom .

In my experience you have to fish Zman slower or use more weight than normal because the material is very buoyant. In the CCA Tide magazine there was an article that showed research that reds and trout can’t see the color red. But striper can. So if you use a red jig they likely see it as a shade of gray.
