as a last resort...needles

frustrated @ losing the last lg. red, I havent slept much. Finally I got back out. The flats had only “sleepers” and after spooking 5, I’d had enuff. Setting up on a draing creek I threw the usual flies( Borski’s, sm. crabs, clousers, Puglisi etc.) until I remebered a red 10+yrs ago chasing to no avail a needlefish in Dec. The only one I had was ment for 'cuda but was a small enough hook to not do any real harm( #1 long shank mylar/flash). The first nervous water was an 11.lb red than inhaled the fly to the crushers. since then, my hands are now caked w/ epoxy and my box is crammed w/ needles. Merry xmas. I’ll post a pic of the fly tom. easy and fun

scotty thats good stuff, i’ll be looking forward to the pic

might as well be dead up here if i cant find that live bottom

here she is

got a recipe?

strip…strip…FISH ON!

its a daiichi no 1 O’shaughnessy (sharpened).
thread: Uni big fly :red
eyes: small mirage- 5 min hand rotated epoxy to get shape of head
tail: shad gray marabou w/ blue & fluo green flashabou
body: tail tied into appr. sized tubing (wet the mar. & flash to make it fit better into the hollow tube) colored later w/ red marker…or whatever… green if I had it.
—the green back was EZ sparkle body
dont overdo the flash but the marabou is key…since it breathes. the reds usually hit this before I even get a chance to strip it once…let it settle. the hook will sink it 1st and tha mar. tail will be the last thing under. it is fairly easy to throw w/ an 8wt and hits soft. the falling tide reds have not let it pass once.

thanks scottyd.
do ya have to let them take it for a second or two to work their way up the fly so you dont pull it away when they dont have the hook yet?
and is that maribou tied to the back of the hook or just at the end of the tubing?
ive been playing around with some epoxy flies recently just been tyin up a lot then epoxying them all at the same time putting them on the drier.

strip…strip…FISH ON!

They are almost swallowing the fly so its not been an issue. very aggressive takes, I just put it to em asap. The marabou is just pushed then tied into the mylar: cut it at a slight angle and wet it and it will be much easier to fit. epoxy will seal the deal

very interesting. never even thot of having a fly part not even attached to the hook. is the lateral line from the hollow of the tube or is it something inside.
i tie a lot of tube flies. wonder how this would work. it might not sink right if the hook was at the back. got my brain churnin though. thanks
weve been catchin needles on topwater plugs but the trout have really turned off in pawleys creek. i would blame the dredge but its only been cranked up a few hours total. parking lot has been blocked 6 weeks and they havent moved 100 feet.

we dont need no reservations we dont need no cruise control

Nice.

heres one i tied up bout an hour ago

any thoughts to putting a small treble on the back?

strip…strip…FISH ON!

I almost did use a stinger, but the redfish have been eating it so deep, I didn’t want to risk it. I havent had one hooked where I could see the fly. buried. Also… I live up the ashley and I absolutely crush the gar on similar flies (warmer water). I did make several w. a no 6 gam. stinker threaded through the body on power pro for them. Instead of Marabou, I used strips of panty hose (which their teeth get snagged in b/f the hook finds its way home)for the tail. It is a blast. extremely underrated fish. That fly looks great, is that silver? If we could buils a body that actually had the action and wiggle of a live one- I think Id retire. Ive been tweeking em @ the vice like a crackhead- my fiance thinks Ive finally lost it.

yea its silver i also have gold and black but thats the only one i tied. pantyhose idea is great! did you just use permanent marker on the back?

strip…strip…FISH ON!

The first ones I did, but I started using EZ sparkle body in fluro chart. It hardenes like softex. It gives a great sheen from underneath, makes the whole mylar turn sorta glow(ish) green.

I wonder if you could stick them with this fly tied on a circle hook? You’d probably have to adjust your strip strike much slower but if they’re eating it deeply, it might work. I would think the circle would make it a lot more snag free in general. Good looking fly.

Ive never tried circle hooks on flies, I dont think I could wait to set the hook. Ive heard they work well w/ albies and other slash/turn pred.s but w/ them they are so fast they hook themselves. Have you/ do you use circles on redfish flies?
