I went for a walk Sunday on the rising to full high tide, on a grass flat on the Ashley near the harbor. Found a couple of promising areas. Saw three tails total. Has a shot at two of them. One was in the middle of an open patch, he was rolling around, every part of him was sticking out of the water at one time or another, but I was downwind and I couldn’t deliver the fly to him. I got really close on one cast and he started following the fly as I stripped it in, took my time and got him into perfect range. Started the next cast to get him and munsoned it pretty badly, ended up putting a sweet bowline into the leader, had a little flyline in there too, quite a sight. Got a little too excited I guess. By the time I solved that puzzle he was out of the area.
The other tail was pretty deep in the grass and I couldn’t drop the fly in front of him. Any tips on dropping in a fly on a fish in 2’ of pretty thick grass? He was a horse though, huge tail waving around. Third one was on the other side of a little creek, no way for me to reach him.
Still, had a great walk, learned some new territory, and I’m just glad that the fish were where I had suspected they might be. Looks like the tides will be great for walking the grass flats this week after work. I’m looking forward to getting out there some more. If anyone wants to join me, shoot me a line.
