Finally hooked my FIRST redfish on the Ashley today! 25" and 4.5 lbs. Lucky for him, I wasn’t having fish for dinner tonight! 45 minutes from dead low, fishing a mud flat next to an oyster bed. Mud minnow under a cork popper.
Nice 3 spotted red. The one in the pic looks below the slot so probably a good thing you didn’t keep that one. The fish are hungry this time of year. Congrats.
The one in pic is 25"!! I had to take the picture myself, so it really does no justice…
That seriously looks under 25" looks 15-17" generously. Also the slot is 15-23, so you would have had to throw him back anyways. But job well done!

Well I hope DNR doesn’t issues incorrect measuring stickers!.. my cooler is 20" wide and he wouldnt fit… no need to argue. I don’t tell fishing stories…
have you ever seen Sellsfish hold up a 7lb doormat flounder? it looked like a tonguefish…it’s all relative…

My bad! He was 22"… Also, I’m 6’3" and 320 pounds. He may appear smaller next to my large head. Either way it was a nice fish and I’m glad I did throw him back. I thought the slot was 27" Ignorance isn’t an excuse when DNR pulls up!
This picture might do it a little more justice. I measured my rod just now from where his tail was to his mouth, which was to the first eye on the rod. I was really surprised I caught him! The tide was just down past the oyster bed and showing a little bit of the mud. I didn’t think I was gonna catch jack. Just wasting some time…
Regardless, that’s a pretty fish. Good job! I like the multi-spots, never caught one with more than 2, though I did catch one with none one time.
Ahhh, its the seldom-seen “reverse push” that occurs when attempting to get a photo of yourself holding a fish. At this point, i think most of us are accustomed to looking at fish that are about 1/2 way between the camera and the angler, producing the inverse effect. You’re a big dude, heck, that might well be a 30" fish!! Nice catch.
I hope you released him. There are only 7 reds in the Ashley

Haha! Yeah, I let him go. That’s an achievement though! Catching one of only 7 redfish in the Ashley River?! I’ll be doing interviews on Fox News at 10. Stay tuned!

Disregard the haters, Dustin. Any fishing-related firsts are something to be proud of. Keep the posts comin’…

onefish hit the nail on the head
Good catch Dustin congrats, I though there was only 5 as I have fished that area a lot with no luck, but if Vin says there is 7 there’s 7

hey DF i caught one with 9 spots on one side and 6 on the other last month at bushy! it was awesome and i have a pic too im just figuring this posting thing out tho i will show em soon as i can!
“Fish On!”
I caught one about two weeks ago with 19 spots on one side and 17 on the other. Methinks he was part trout! Earlier in the year, I caught a 12" red with exactly nine spots on each side and they pretty much were identical, side to side. Very rarely do I catch one with just one spot, anymore.

Definitely a good fish. Awesome first one for sure! I wasn’t intending to be a “hater” by any means. And yeah I agree those solo pics never work good (at least for me). Does anybody remember bugsmummys report last December where he caught 50+ reds for 2 straight days in December? Obviously theres more than 7 lol. Although I have yet to catch one there

I went out again today and didn’t get a bite until the water was below the oyster bed. Caught a red about 13 inches. Does the current running so fast have anything to do with this? It really rolls out there until the tide is almost out… I don’t think anyone’s a hater. Lol! It does look smaller in the picture.
I catch reds all day in the Ashley, not to mention a few black drum here and there. Trout are plentiful , it’s the flounder I can’t find! Nice catch
