At my wit's end

I am trying to remove the lower mount from the mid section of a 2002 Suzuki DF140 so that I can remove the rust from the steering arm and paint it. Engines removed, mid section removed, only thing left is to remove the lower mount so that the steering arm can be taken off. I have removed the circlip from the shaft and the manual only mentions the circlip. I have a two arm puller that is applying pressure to take it off but don’t want to break anything. I have applied heat with a propane torch, used PB Blaster, placed a 2x4 against the mount and hit it with a hammer and nothing. Am I missing something? Any suggestions?

Propane torch is not going to provide as much heat as you think.
I would let the PB blaster sit overnight. I had a similar issue once and was using a hydraulic porta-power to apply pressure. I had to let the PB sit overnight and it came apart.
One thing you may want to try, after you spray the PB blaster on it, tap around on the housing with a small hammer to provide a little vibration. Some times that will help the PB penetrate in between the parts.

If and I do mean IF you’re sure you have removed clips and all keepers and have soaked with blaster for a while, put firm pressure with puller and tap puller screw head with small hammer rapidly but but not really hard , all you want to do is shock the shaft , may have to re-pressure screw pull slightly then repeat , repeat…
good luck!!!

Thanks guys! I will liberally apply the PB Blaster and let it sit overnight. I’m pretty sure I removed the only clip, you can see it in the pic next to the propane torch.

not familiar with the job your doing, but looking at your puller placement, I’d be careful putting too much pressure on it. Cast Aluminum breaks easy. Or I’m guessing that’s cast aluminum? Anyway Good Luck with it!

Yeah Fred, that’s my concern too. I’ve applied as much pressure as I felt comfortable with and that’s why I posted this for any suggestions. I figured someone’s been in this situation before. I usually figure it out after I break it[:I] I really do appreciate the ■■■■■■■■, it either gives me suggestions or let’s me know I’m on the right track. Breaking the mount is definitely high on my list of concerns. I’m not going to tighten it any more, I’ll try RDW and Gails suggestions of tapping it with a hammer.

you need MUCH more heat

Thanks Chris V, more heat over a bigger area or more heat temp wise? I’m thinking that the torches you use to burn the ditches with would put more heat over a given area, is that the route I should take? Thanks again to all that have helped.

I just went through something similar and we ended up using a MAPP gas torch. It took a lot of heat and a lot of banging to get my particular part off but it did work. Actually I think it is the same part just for a Honda, I was doing swivel case stern bracket repairs.

I will say this. I never in a million years would have had the stones to beat on this thing as hard as we did. My only saving grace was a good friend who is a great marine mechanic standing there telling me to keep going. I see your clamp and I tried the same thing but keep in mind an impact load is different than a steady pressure.

Success!!! I applied more heat and tapped then tightened the two prong puller. Then repeated the process until it can off. Had one small chunk of aluminum break off when I tighten more than I should have. Thanks for the advice from y’all!
