Auto switch for bilge pump problem

I had to install a new bilge pump in my boat and my old auto switch had not worked in some time so I also purchased a new one of those.

When I flip my pump in auto and manually flip the auto switch(not yet installed just wired to make sure it works) I can hear the bilge pump running but it will not pump the water out. I can turn the bilge pump on and it will pump the water out fine.

I even reversed the wires to make sure it was not that, it almost seems the pump does not get enough power to pump

What would cause this

Are you using any existing wiring? I have had problems before with wires that are partially corroded. They work fine under a continuity check, however will not allow enough amps to flow to handle the load. Also make sure you follow the wiring diagram, that pump will “run” regardless of polarity, but if polarity is reversed the pump will be running backwards and will not pump as well.

Thanks, I am using existing wiring and wondering if that is my problem. I also have a black (i assume) ground wire that is loose in the battery compartment but everything works and i have really not know what it was for.

Someone mentioned that I could not be getting a good enough ground but not sure that wire would have anything to do with that, I would think that would keep it from working period but I will check
