You should have told her to go piss up a rope, GTFO the BOAT RAMP with her toy and stay the hell out of your way.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Thanks for the info but it is not just Shem creek. Sorry to say it but South Carolina is the most unfriendly boater state there is. The ramps are small, the parking sucks, and then to allow people to fish and crab off the docks like they own them. I have lived in 6 different states in the past 12 years and yes this one is the worse. I boat for a living and feel that Staten Island New York which is the arm pit of America is better then this place . This is a coastal state and everyone lets it be known for its sea food, fishing, boat, and beaches. Yet the average boat ramp has 50 spots to park in so you better get there at 10am so you can get a spot or just don’t plan on going boating the day.
Sorry for the rant just thought this state would be boater supportive.
I have to agree.
Since I spent most of my life as a bank fisherman, it’s not much easier for us. SC does at least throw us a bone once in a while with piers (not counting the overpriced $10-15/day places) but we definitely need more bank fishing access, more parking places at the boat ramps, and more obvious rules on not occupying piers used for boating only. I don’t mind cast-netters throwing for bait, but it’s just pathetic when I get back to the ramp and both sides are covered in fishermen that look at you like you’re a piece of crap for interrupting their fishing.
When I lived in Raleigh, they had similar problems. Nobody seems to think of just how many boats will be used on any given day, nor do they do a thing to help bank fisherman. When I’d take my son fishing (he was 2!), I’d have to hike all my tackle AND a toddler down to the bank from several hundred yards away— the only “non trailer” parking spaces would be on the dark side of the moon, which is stupidity in design.
Drove down by Steamboat Landing today and there must have been atleast 10 people on the floating dock crabbing. Couple of people came up and actually had to put their bow on the ramp and let someone go get the trailer.

That is exactly what I encountered there this weekend. I know there were 8 people on the floating dock crabbing. I backed down and gave them plenty of time to pull their lines. I heard all kinds of comments. I wanted to give them a little informative lecture but decided to hold my tongue so I didn’t come back to flat tires.
That poor woman spent all day paddling up and down Shem Creek, without even the drunkest Red’s patron flirting with her.
Then, you violate her right to ownership of an entire public landing so she could rest her “full figure” while figuring out where the receipt was for that little girl’s floaties so she could return them to Walmart. Sure it says not for safety floatation right on them, but they have air in 'em, don’t they!
Nice! You probably ruined her whole day! You need to respect the rights of other people to ignore your rights more. Hell she looks like she might be pregnant to boot!
She wasn’t at the ramp today. The ramp was busy with guides and us and everything went smoothly.
I was hoping she was going to be at the ramp today. I was ready to be a smart butt today. Maybe some other day.
/y’all making me laugh, btw.

Have SUP’s taken the place of kayaks? Used to be kayakers clogging up the ramps but I guess SUP’s the in thing to do now. Anyone ever waked a bunch of them to see if they fall down like bowling pins? New game…knock over the SUP!

I frequently get fuel in Shem Creek and they are everywhere. I watch out for them when entering or leaving the dock but many times they have paddled right in my way. If they just held there position they would be fine but more times than not they make it worse by trying to get out of the way. They are just a pain in the ass. I have never seen one outside of a no wake zone but I look forward to seeing how they handle a wake.(Politically correct version)
If I compare a typical 12-16’ kayak to an SUP, the kayak is a craft that can handle some swells/wake/chop with a basic level of paddler experience, it can carry some gear and it can make a reasonable speed. The SUP can’t do any of the above. I think in 10 years we’ll see as many of them as we do windsurfers today (which has mostly been replaced with kiteboarding anyway).

I wonder if some of those paddle boarders have any sense at all. Last week we saw a lone girl paddler past the red and green channel markers outside of Mt. Pleasant Channel (by crab bank). It looked like she was going to make the turn and head up the ICW. She wasn’t over the mud flats by Pitt Street bridge either…she was in deep water. And as far as I could tell, her pfd was strapped to her board. Image if she fell off during some of those big swells with those gusty winds.
I assume Darwin missed that one.

I went out the other week and saw two paddle boarders at the far end of the jetties. I hope they were utilizing the tides to get in or out, I have never tried paddle boarding but I can’t imagine trying to come in against the tide going out. Not to mention that is a long way to be out if a storm happens to roll up. Its only a matter of time before you start seeing some idiots out at the Charleston 60, it could happen. If I’ve seen a 14’ tiller driven flat bottom skiff at the Comanche then why not.
There is a rule about the dock/ramp/pier fishing and I think it says that boats have the right of way when launching or retrieving.
Double D.
Yeah, That is what the law states, but rarely what happens… I can not count the times that I have tied up to the dock at the WO Thomas Boat landing and had to do it over fishing lines and crab traps… I usually give a kind warning that I am coming in the that spot and if they make no effort to move, its game on… I did cut a line to a drop net with the prop once (unintentionally?) from one couple who refused to move stating that they were there first… They started raising hell, I called DNR, they left… I doubt they even had a license…
And, Shem Creek has gotten bad with Paddle Boarders… We used to go there a lot to have lunch on the weekends, but I rarely go there anymore because of the hassle…

My wife (The Warden) and I were talking about that crazy girl yesterday and we think we’ve come up with a solution the Town needs to make at the ramp:
They need to make a kayak/paddle board launch over by the storm pipe. It’s deep enough for a paddle board or kayak, but not really deep enough for a boat. And it should be exclusive for paddlers or kayakers. Give them a nice walk and ramp to a small floating dock.
Everyone can then sing Kum-ba-ya.

Great idea. Someone would have to push the issue pretty hard and then find funding.
“Apathy is the Glove in Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.
The Town is going to expand the “new” Mt.P. board walk to be about a mile long. I would imagine it would not be too difficult to siphon off a few thousand for this kind of project.
