avoiding seasickness

Haven’t been offshore in years but might have an oppty to go this weekend. I seem to get motion/seasick about 50% of the time when I’m offshore.

I’m interested to hear the tried n true remedies that you trust and recommend.

Thanks

Myth busters did a show about this. They concluded that taking Ginger worked as well as any prescription.
I used to take it before I get in the truck in the morning. I have taken 1 at night and 1 in the morning, but see no difference.

I find that eating a bready sandwich works best for me. I get those pre-made hoagies from Publix. lots of bread. eat half and I’m all set.

Good luck

Lots of Jack Daniels the night before always works for me. Give it a try and let us know how it worked for you!

Meclizine hcl

Dramamine the night before and first thing in the morning works for me.
It also helps to get some food and beer in as soon as you get to the fishing grounds…even if it is 6:30-7am!

Zofran. And eat something in the morning before you leave.

ALOT of water and a can of whole sardines. Always works for me. I used to be in the Navy on a frigate. A very small narrow warship that gets tossed around like an empty coke can. We used to eat that stuff in the sonar shack in front of new guys during rough seas.

I get me son the patch from the doc, it works

You can also keep the little pink umbrella from your glass and use it instead of foul weather gear…

I found drink 2-3 beers on the way out and take meclizine seems to work. Im in the same boat as you I get sick half the time other half im fine.

I got vertigo last year from an inner ear infection. Doctor prescribed Meclizine. You can get it over the counter in most drug stores, and even find chewable tablets that don’t taste horrible. It really helped me out.

The medicine works, but make sure you have your fluids. Proper hydration the day before and the day of the trip always helps dramatically.

take 1 non drowsy dramamine before going to sleep but make sure to chase it with several budlights! then take one more of each on way to boat in am. then when cutting lose from dock, pop another top!

Bland meal the night before like a turkey sandwich with just mustard. Saltine crackers and ginger ale for the ride out (lots). Swish the ginger ale before swallowing and make yourself belch. The GinGin chewable candy in peanut butter flavor is a really good addition. Continue to hydrate with ginger ale and water. Try to drink enough to make yourself pee. If you can’t pee once or twice during the day offshore your not hydrating enough.

I don’t know if there is one magic remedy. Here is some advise that has helped me in the past.

  1. Get plenty of rest the night before
  2. Take a seasick pill( which ever one you are most comfortable with) the night before. It will also help you go to sleep.
  3. Eat something. An empty belly makes you feel bad when you are not on a rocking boat.
  4. Don’t obsess over the possibility of getting sick or you probably will.
  5. Drink plenty of fluids the day before and during the trip.
  6. Don’t show up hung over.

Good luck

Good advice, especially this…

4. Don't obsess over the possibility of getting sick or you probably will.

People who think they might usually do, best to keep those thoughts at bay. I was a charter boat captain for a long time, got over 3,000 logged trips and have taken about 12,000 people offshore fishing. Seen a LOT of people throw up  I could usually tell when they walked down the dock who would and who wouldn’t.

That being said, even my salt blooded self will sometimes get queasy.
Seasickness is caused by a mental imbalance between what your eyes are seeing and what your inner ear is feeling. Don’t focus on objects that are on the same plane as you are for very long. Keep your eyes up and scanning, looking at the horizon which is moving like your inner ear. The plotter, fish finder, radar, charts, or trying to tie a knot sitting in the bottom of the boat will all make your brain conflict with your equilibrium. Try to do tasks with your head up and keep your eyes moving.

I had a first mate for a few years who swore by a dramamine and a beer in the morning, and another one who wore some kind of acupressure band on her wrist, and a beer, and swore it worked. My wife is very prone to motion sickness and wears a transderm scopolomine patch whenever she goes offshore or flies. I’ve seen every cure work, and I’ve seen every cure fail. There is no true remedy for everyone, but a positive mental attitude, not being hung over and full of greasy food, stay well hydrated and keep those eyes up and moving so they can
