Awesome Weekend On The Water

A bit chilly in the morning, but otherwise a gorgeous weekend with light winds, light tides, crystal clear water and clear skies.

Headed down from Columbia with a buddy early evening Friday to get an early start Sat am and we were on the water by 7:30.

Worked our way up and down the ICW throwing white grubs and TT’s. It was a slow, but steady pick and we never really found a real “honey hole”…just did a lot of moving around. Had a nice surprise when Rod picked up a (short 13") flounder working a grub slowly along the bottom. After that we were determined to get at least one redfish, but couldn’t pull it off…at this time anyway.

By about lunchtime when the tide peaked we had caught 6 keeper trout, about 15 shorts, the little flattie and 2 blue fish.

Had some lunch and it was time to move off to some top secret numbers and give the sheepies a try and maybe pick up some keeper BSB. Both cooperated and although most were short fish, we were able to weed through them and pick up some keepers as well as a redfish that let us put another check on our bucket list! I was jigging a 3/4 oz Hopkins spoon hoping to get some bigger BSB when there was a big hit on the drop and it was on! I was using my lucky light spinner w/10 lb mono and fought that fish for what seemed to be 20 min. I was able to see the spool a couple of times, but finally got it to the boat. Turned out to be a nice 34" redfish.

Decided that the next day we wouldn’t rush to get out on the water and not bother trout fishing in the morning before trying the sheeps again. My son in Columbia decided to come down along with my youngest grandson and fished in my other son’s boat next to us and we all had a ball.

Had to weed through a lot of shorts to get our keepers, but wound up with some decent sheeps and only a couple of keeper BSB that day. Called it a day about 3:30 and headed back to the marina to clean the fi

Nice fish and good trip.
What were using for bait for those sheepshead?
And what kind of rig?

All the sheep’s were on fiddlers. Carolina rig with about a 12" flouro leader and Owner 1/0 Mutu Lite Circle hook.
