Backs outta da water

Finally got to do some of my favorite flyfishing. Hit the water early Sat for the super low tide and found a place in the river that usually gets alot of chop from boat traffic in the midday but is usually pretty quite in the AM. The reds like to edge up into the skinny water right up on the mud along a bend in the river with their backs out of the water, just cruising along when they think no one is looking. You could see the shrimp jumping out of the water trying to get out of the way when the fish would get close to them. Every once in a while they would swirl on something and send a spray of shrimp and minnows scattering in suprise. There were probably 4-5 fish, just cruising along, up and down the bank, staying in a roughly 40ft section each. Tossed a new pattern of mine in front of them and gave a short strip when the fish came near (although I probably could’ve tied on a cigarrette butt - they were so tuned into feeding that they made it look easy). You can almost hear them say “Oh crap!” when they realize they’ve been fooled and then take off like a freight train. Just gotta remember not to overdo it so they’ll stay there this summer… Even made it back to the house by mid-AM for the honey-do list.
