Hadn’t been seeing much at all in the swamp behind my house this season. Moved a climber into an area with some thicker woods where I found a few fresh tracks and a couple rubs. Then that hurricane came and the water got kinda high. Sat this stand once last week then the first time in the morning today. Heard some deer splashing 10 mins after getting set up, but too dark to see. 7:15 I hear splashing again and deer coming behind me. Stood up and got the 870 ready as a doe went behind me then made a u-turn and came right behind my stand at 10-15 yards. Then I heard him grunting like crazy and splashing through the water after her. He got right behind my tree and I “meeeahh’d” at him then blasted him as he was going through some brush. Dropped right there. Shoulda seen the amount of skeeters all over him when I walked up to him. Thought he was bigger than what he was but I’m not too picky when it comes to my own land, 147 lbs. I know it’s still pretty early in the season but after I got down and was texting some buddies I heard more splashing and had a 4 pt and a spike come running right up to me like they were trailing that doe too. The 4 pt took off after the spike after he saw him. Almost seemed like a November morning, only it was muggy and buggy.

sounds like a exciting hunt.great report and good job.those 870s are hard to beat!

Nice one!

that’ll do, nice work!

Slug or buckshot? I’ve thought about taking one with my 870 this season.

Buckshot 000 2 3/4# full choke. Ive shot quite a few loads and this seems to pattern the tightest for me. Ive also shot a couple with 2 3/4 rifled slugs modified choke. Im pretty confident withbthe slugs out to about 50yds. Got tru glo sights, might help some.

Those rifled slugs work ok with a smooth bore barrel? I have an older Remington 1100 and have thought about using slugs. Have seen a few barrels puffed up near the end and was told it was caused by shooting slugs. Didn’t look to see what choke they were though.

shot slugs a lot in my youth, the brenneke style slugs work great out of a smooth bore- if you can hit a gallon jug with it- you can kill deer with them. Most of our shotguns were milk jug accurate with just a bead to about 80 yards. Very deadly

Congrats. Yeah, them Skeeters have been BAD!!!

Rifled slugs are designed to be shot in a smooth bore and sabot slugs are designed to be shot from a rifled barrel.

God bless the “ignore” function.

Thanks for the information guys.
