Fished the F&B Tournament on HHI. Jimmy, Marsh Monkey, Bad Apple and myself tried to put a hurting on the cobia. Had 3 in the boat by 8AM. Biggest was just shy of 40#. 2 fish agg. weight was 110# for the winner(biggest fish weighed was 69#). Had a fun day, even though we weren’t even close.
Now the good story. We put a 17# gag in the box in 55’ and 5 nice flounder. I casted my $500 bottom setup up on some structure, and was greeted 20 yards out with a braid backlash. With 12oz. of lead traveling away from me at a rapid rate the rod was ripped from my hands. Down she went in 55’. I proceeded to tie up a big bucktail jig(in white of course, since it always produces) and on the second try hooked my bottom rod. I got it to just out of gaff range and couldn’t budge it. Marsh Monkey got another jig on it and we were able to get it back in the boat. I then proceeded to real in the line and was greeted by an 18" gag on the other end.
I knew we would not be in the $ since we had used up all the good luck.
Talk about lucky! Nice work!

Once I was night fishing and just bought a brand new lantern (really nice one but it did not float). Well all heck broke loose as my large bait caster doubles over and starts singing… We get this really nice 35# blue cat in but in his thrashing knocks the lantern over board. I was not pleased b/c this was not a cheap lantern but we could not get it back (about 40-50’ of water in a lake). The next night we went back to same area and actually hooked the lantern. Would you belive it was still BURNING?
Haha Just messing with you. Incredible stroke of luck and no doubt a good bit of skill to get you rig back on board. Congrats on the fish and the saving of some expensive equipment!
You gonna talk or FISH!
Courtland. If you want to get it overhauled send Alan an e-mail. alantani@yahoo.com This is the guy that lives out in California that reworked my TLD 15’s. You’ve seen them in action, and so far they’ve worked better then new ones. Had them back within two weeks, but that doesn’t always happen he says.
Here is a link of him rebuilding a 30 wide.

David, it’s a PENN, it’ll be fine. I hear those Shimano’s like the mild California climate.
Catch em’ up this weekend, we’ll get out there soon.
Looks like our aggregate weight record from 3 years ago just fell (Sea Pines & Lowcountry Lobsters). We had it with 105 lbs…look on the trophy. That is a fun tourney! the awards party is a good time.
good job on getting the rig back.
