Bad idea 6/14

Had some family in from Jacksonville that I grew up with fishing the GOM. They insisted on going and today was the only plausible option so @ 3am myself, uncle, 2 cousins and my 7 year old boy hit the road. Sailflow, Reefcast and NOAA reports seemed fine. I had my concerns of the wind but was hoping for a light chop on long swells. After a phone call to Sellsfish and he said he wasn’t going that it was going to be nasty, I argued my point and went anyways. By 6am I had already text him that he was right and inside the jetties were stacked up 3x4’s. Not good. Family insisted that maybe it’ll clear out a little further so on we went. 24 miles and 1.5 hours later we dropped lines in 90’ of water. Trigger, ARS, B-liners, BSB, Ringtails, grunts and even a Moray Eel came over the rails. Got rocked once coulda been good grouper, maybe not. Finished the day with a sharpnose, 3 green faces and 2 hours of miserable conditions fishing and headed home. It was hella nice to be home and boat cleaned, fish cleaned the whole shebang in Lexington by 2pm. I’ll never doubt Sells again. However a phone call once we were back on the road seemed to give him a hell of a lot of chuckles. Live and ya learn. Proud father moment watching my 7 year old boy catch a ARS/Trigger followed by the next drop producing another decent ARS. Don’t mind the $1.69 Walmart chicken rigs. They are for my guests as they tend to lose about $50 worth of tackle every trip to sharks. He was stoked and knew he had the best catch of the day. He wasn’t a happy camper to know all his hard work went back to swim again. (**() regulations.

This boy can sleep through the worst of seas

Bad when this is as fast as you can manage. Had sons best interest in mind. Coulda go

Bouy right now reads 2 ft at 3.5 secs. That’s like riding over constant speed bumps. Looks like it wasn’t a total loss though! FYI you normally can buy 55 yards of 80 lb mono for less than 10 dollars. Learn how to tie a dropper loop and start tying your own. Look up pete’s sinkher’s and buy your lead from him. It will start saving you a lot of money over buying retail lead and loosing 1.69 a piece rigs every time the tax man shows up.

BTW, how was getting that moray off the hook?

We got the Moray Eel to spit up the bait. I know how to tie my own chicken rigs. Have been doing so for years. I bought these due to costs tomorrow to try. The problem is the sharks slashing through the 100lb mono above the hook or shredding the rigs and loosing them all. I have a hookup that I get my 8oz sinkers for just under $1 each. Is there a better price? I used to make my own lead sinkers and still have my Bank, Egg and Cannon ball molds but I don’t have the time or patience to go find my own lead to make them.

Atleast y’all got some fish, and more importantly made a safe trip back home. If you ever decide to sell the molds I may be interested. My dad and brothers run a tire shop, I assume this lead would work?

That’s where I got mine from

Not that bad of a call, I see some happy faces, and you got some good family time in.

Get your lead from Pete at petessinkhers.com

edit: already made lead

That’s a fine looking family you’ve got! The pictures of your boy with the snapper are great. I’d frame one of those and hang it on the wall:sunglasses:

Under a dollar a piece is a great price. Where is that from.

Got my lead off EBay for $29 for 30 8oz bank sinkers. They are super clean too. Better shape than what I buy in the retail stores.

Tough trying to learn when to fish the Atlantic. Especially when you have to travel there from Lexington. I’m in the same boat as you now. Grew up on GOM. Now that I’m living in Lexington I’ve had to turn back twice when I thought the weather would be good enough. Short runs in GOM vs these long runs out of Atlantic have a lot to do with it.
