So my family has rented a house on IOP next week, but all of my boats are out of commission at the moment. We even have a house with a dock. I could cry, so my fishing in the rivers, jetties, and reefs are not going to happen. What I do have is a dock just south of the iop connector bridge, and surf fishing. Any insight of what i could do? Or if anyone is going out do you have any extra room for me, ill pay for my part.
Rent a kayak. You can hit tons of great fishing grounds and walk the flats on a few flood tides and probably have a better time than dealing with the boat. Granted you can’t take families out, but they’ll be fine with the beach while you aimlessly cruise the docks and grass flats, so you can meet up later at Coconut Joes Or Luke N Ollies for dinner and refreshments.
I do have a canoe! But I’m not so sure about taking it. I know the water pretty good, heck I’m down in Charleston every weekend. But I was worried about the current if I take the canoe out… I may drink too many brews and tucker out quicker…
The current isn’t bad on a canoe. I can’t speak specifically about the ICW, but I’ve had my 12’ Coleman in some fairly swift current at Bushy Park, Bowens Island, and the Santee River.
Just put in and take it easy on where you go until you get the hang of what it’s doing. The current should slip right under you for the most part as long as you don’t get sideways. The wind can also have it’s way with you if it’s bad.
“Sire, it belongs in truth to the Church of God, in whose name I speak, to endure blows and not to inflict them. But it will also please your Majesty to remember that she is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.”…Theodore Beza
Don’t know about a canoe, but I have paddled a 12’ SOT kayak against a swift current with a 1’ chop effortlessly on the ICW at IOP. Lots of great dock fishing around there right now.
toss some coin at the repair shop to get moved up the boat fix list! ITS YOUR VACATION! Toss a hunny at the service manager! You’re gonna spend that at a dinner where you are staying anyway. Take them fishing, eat hot dogs that day - break even!
Book a charter with one of the guides out of the IOP Marina. There a bunch of good people that work out of there and they offer everything for inshore from a flats boat to a bay boat for jetty fishing. 843-886-0209
I would absolutely love to charter a guide, I have a lot to learn. But I don’t like forking out $500 for just me. I know it takes a lot of money to fill the boat and pay for bait ext. I am taking our jet ski down. Maybe i can get lucky.
I always fish out on the falling tide and come in on the rising in my kayak. Use the current to your advantage. I hardly ever paddle other than keeping it pointed in the right direction. The best fishing is on the falling anyway.
