I woke up early Sunday thinking that I could maybe beat the wind and do a little fishing. The tide was not predicted to be great, but I figured I could fish this one flat that normally produces at marginal tides. The wind was already blowing, and I drank some coffee and considered just staying home. Finally at about 7am I decided, I am up I might as well go out.
I got out to the flat and there way more water than predicted, probably a 7.7 or 7.8 vs the 7.5 predicted. I changed plans and went to a flat where a 7.7-7.8 would be good.
As soon as I got out on the flat I saw fish. The first one was behind me and really close. He ended up spooking on a pretty good cast…I think he may have already seen me before I tried to cast to him. I saw another and had a fish on in about 8 inches of water. It didn’t seem like that nice a fish at first. While I was fighting this fish I saw another about 30 feet away…decided to hurry up and get the fish in so I could try for the other. Started horsing the fish in, and got it to where it could see me and it was actually a 27" fish and he took off. By the time I landed it I had lost track of the other fish.
Caught the first one at 0743
I did find the other fish, but just as he was moving from a grass patch that protected the water from the wind to a really windy patch and ended up loosing sight of the fish. Once it was in the rough water I just could not track it.
I found another two fish tailing and hooked and landed them both, about 19-22". I had caught all of these fish on a craft shrimp that I had tied up the night before.
that’s awesome!
looks like a beautiful day to me!
wish I could of taken advantage of a day like this! I had one a few weeks ago…and I’m itching for another one before the season ends!!!
The Corks,
That particular fly is just the standard dupree fly, not one that I had tied. The last green spoon I tied is stuck in a fish’s jaw in Bluffton SC from a couple of weeks ago!
I use a ready made mylar body that I get from a fly shop called creative feathers when I make my spoon flies. I used to use Christmas bows, but it is so much easier with the precut patterns. I think the website is as follows:
Now the dupre spoon that I caught this fish on was an actual dupree spoon that I bought at Bay Street Outfittes in Beaufort (I had made a green spoon a couple of weeks ago but broke it off on the third fish in a row on another flat)
