Anyone know a good bait for minnow traps?
hot dogs, fish remains, cat food, bread w/mayo. They are not too picky!!

crab parts, fish parts, shrimp shells, old stuff from the freezer. my favorite is a fresh smashed half blue crab, but boiled and picked shell that smells like old bay will work too.
if you use something like bread or cat food, tie it into cheese cloth or some hosiery if the trap will be out a while before checking.
if there are minnows around, 5 minutes will do it- in shallow spots like creek pools, i would recommend submerging the trap halfway- set in about 6" of water so the little openings are at (or just below) the waterline- makes it very easy for them all to funnel in quickly so you can get to fishing!

We use a slice of wheat bread with excellent results. No mess, no smell, easy cleanup, and it works day or night on any tide that gets the trap under water.

The best baits I have found have a lot of oil, and cannot be completely eaten or taken away out of the trap when you want to soak it overnight. All the mentioned baits are great along with my favorites of fried chicken bones and eaten corn on the cob that was cooked in a low country boil. If you want to catch them in a hurry, and you are in a spot where there are lots of em, crushed blue crab and trout row are the best IMO.
