Bait is gone

Has anyone else noticed that the finger mullet and shrimp are basically gone this year? I’ve only been able to catch 3 finger mullet in my past couple trips and they were only about half an inch long and the shrimp were an absolute joke. Usually by now we have schools of finger mullet everywhere at low tide and I can usually load up on finger mullet and shrimp in just a few throws of the net.

The creeks that we frequent still have plenty of both. The shrimp are definitely small, but they’re there. Lots of minnows as well. And yesterday, I notice manhadden everywhere as well. One poor throw of the cast net and I more than enough manhadden.

Menhaden all over the Folly River, also have caught some larger size mullet and small/medium size shrimp the last few trips out. The fishing on the other hand seems unusually slow.

I have noticed that the bait is pretty thick in the ICW or nearer the ocean, but not so much up the creeks this year. Maybe I’m crazy.

Optiker, that is what I’m saying. The bait doesn’t seem to be in the creeks this year like it usually is.

Exactly

There are a fair amount of schools by IOP. Morgan Creek has a good bit of schools at certain tides but like you said they’re fairly small. I’ve seen a lot behind goat island and creeks on mt. p side of intracostal.

I’ve not seen or caught any decent bait shrimp or finger mullet in the upper Wando either. There’s been plenty of large mullet and very small shrimp. I’m hoping in another week or two the shrimp will be large enough to catch and fish with…
