Bait Lights

What lights do you guys use? Are hydroglows worth the extra money or do you have the same results with cheap lights? I’m in the market for a bait light and would like to get everyone’s take on them.

I’ve only just bought a hydroglow this year after years of using my own cheap light set up and glad I did. Both work and I’ve caught tons of bait with my cheap lights. But…I like having the one light that stores away nicely opposed to the multiple lights that were always awkward to store on the boat. Also, I used 12V CFL bulbs in my cheapo set up and they are not very robust and don’t stand up to the pounding on the boat if you don’t wrap them up good when not in use.

IMO, it’s all about how much night fishing you plan on doing. The hydroglows are not cheap and probably not worth buying if you are only going to night fish a few times a year. But, if you plan on going night fishing fairly regularly, I’d suggest investing in one.

I fish almost exclusively at night and the hydroglow has more than paid for itself in the bait I have caught.

i have been thinking of buying one of these just to see how bright it is. would probably put some magnets on the boat and just stick it to the side a couple of inches down in the water. If it isn’t bright enough then i can just use it for a boat light…Anyone know the total luminous power on a hydroglow? These have 360 lm. per 2’. but they only come in cool blue and white in the waterproof models.

The 12v Brinkman Starfire II is hard to beat for under $15 at Academy Sports.

I’d rather fish than eat.

Heard a lot of praise for “reel lights” over on crappie.com

Chip, to give you an idea of the output of these, you are getting 60 Cree LEDs for $30. Thats .50 per LED. A 4’ hydro glow has 648 LEDs. So you are getting 1/11th the output. And also only transmitting from one side at a shallow depth. The price for the hydro glows work out to .50 per LED you just pick your size/price range. 1’, 2’, or 4’. Personally, I would buy the Hydro Glow that I could afford, or go as cheap as possible. I really haven’t found a “cheap” way around the light output of the premium lights.

There new panfish light looks pretty good for $90.
