Bait of choice

Plan on hitting the river up this weekend, and do some fishing Saturday and Sunday. What kind of bait has everyone been using lately? What’s been getting the most action? Thanks.

Cut mullet on the bottom and minnows under corks. High wind and cloudy water have made the bottom more predictable

I caught a bunch of whiting off of cut finger mullet and pieces of frozen shrimp a couple weekends ago. Both seemed to work equally well. I haven’t been out much since then and was just fishing off the back of my beached up boat while my nieces played on the beach.

Which would you rather use, live shrimp or mud minnows?

Tough choice, I would say if I had to pick live shrimp as everything eats it although mud minnows sometimes outfish shrimp and vice versa.

Live shrimp are great, but anything will eat a live shrimp, which is sometimes a problem. Sometimes you can keep the junkfish away from a mud minnow, so it’s good to have both. Mud minnows are also a heck of alot easier to keep alive as well.

Try to cast net some 4" menhaden, great bait in the river this time of the year!

Thanks everyone, I do need to start using my cast net more often instead of buying live bait every time I go.

You should use all the above, shrimp, MM and cut mullet. The fish will tell you what they want at that time. So have it all oh hand.
