I recently had 4 dozen herring die in my bait tank, twice (Thank You David for rescuing me the second time). I couldn’t figure it out, but the answer is that my local water company, Carolina Water Service, switched from using chlorine to chloramine to treat the water. They had actually sent out a letter informing their customers of the change which included a warning for those that have aquariums. Somehow I missed the letter. They did this in September and Bait Saver (or Better Bait) will not remove it. Apparently chloramine has already been in use at some water treatment plants while others are starting to switch to it (I’m sure that it saves them money). So if you are on some sort of city or private water service, BEWARE. Or if you are using another product to treat your water, be sure that it will handle chloramine. Fortunately, there is a product sold at Wal-Mart that will remove it (Thanks Chip). It is called “Start Right” and is in the aquarium section. It is an 8 oz. bottle and you use 1 cap full for 10 gallons. I’m posting this (I should have already posted it) so that maybe it will spare you from having your fishing day ruined. I learned my lesson the hard way.
P.S. I have a brand new 3 lb. container of Better Bait for sale.
