Im back in Lexington for good! Just bought a Pontoon and plan on fishing A LOT this year. Just gonna keep 4-5 dozen herring in it. I am in no big hurry to get it as I plan on trolling the next few weeks. Really dont wanna spend above 300.

It’s hard to beat a Vest Super Bait Tank. But you will have to wait for a used one with $300 budget. Might have to add another #50. I’d get a 30 or 50 gallon

oh man … you should have gone to the Striper Club meeting last week … they spent 2 days on cast netting for bait and a DIY home bait tank … I didn’t go because I had other commitments, but one of the guys posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about it … you should ask him to put you in touch with the guys … oooorrrrrr … you could just buy one …
it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!

I used a home built tank in my boat for 6 years but then I won a tournament after borrowing Mike Maddalena’s Ron Vest Super Bait tank II for a tournament on Lake Lanier and I bought a 50 gal Vest tank with my winnings… Having high quality bait will definitely catch more fish…and there is a difference between bait that is alive and high quality bait. Get the biggest tank you can for the space you have available. I know its easy for me to spend ur money but its worth the investment and they hold their value well too…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

This is the truth for sure. I used a large cooler with a homemade venturi for years. I used to hear people talking about healthy bait, yadda yadda yadda and I needed a bait tank ya ya ya…my bait was living never had any die and so forth so I never listened.
I finally came across a great deal on a 20gal grayline. Figured it wouldn’t be any different than my cooler but wanted to be “cool” guy with a tank…lol… the first trip I thought something was wrong with my bait. It wasn’t black on top like it had been for soooo many yrs , it was actually almost glowing a neon green color. Turns out I finally had healthy bait. It lives on the hook for twice as long and is friskier than ever.
Since then I have upgraded to a 50gal Baker tank and couldn’t be happier. I still have the gray line and thinking of selling but haven’t decided.

This is a post I almost wish I hadn’t read. We’re just using a 10 gal bucket with basic areator and never put more than 2 dozen herring in it. Of course we use foam off and add frozen lake water as ice when needed. We’re happy that we keep our herring alive, but now you’ve got me thinking. Maybe we do need a bigger boat.
The dreaded words of a boater, “I need a bigger boat” haha. I am in the process of looking for a bait tank that I can mount under my leaning post.
