Hey all, long time no speak, I haven’t been out since July and just wanted to see what the bait situation. I’m going this week at low tide, will there be any issue catching Haden or horse mullet, trash fish to cut up? Appreciate the help I’m advance.
Pick your poison; mullet of all sizes, menhaden, shrimp, pinfish, etc. are all in abundance.

Where are the menhaden in abundance? Serious question.
Charleston City Papers Best Guide of 2014
Both Edisto rivers are full.
dinner plate sized menhaden all up in shem last week (biggest I’ve seen, about 12 inches). also, little croakers, finger mullet, a few horse mullet, and shrimp. never saw anything on top of the water except menhaden, but lots of flashes underneath helped me locate.
Bait is plentiful right now, a few more weeks and it will be famine. Get on them now cause the water temp is dropping quick!

Went out last week with a friend and he crushed it on blue crab and I got skunked on shrimp and minnows. Going out at 7 tomorrow so I’ll check back.
Kayak fish, usually Wando or creeks off the ICW north of Chas Harbor. Sometimes surf fish (mainly SI).

Please share more about locating menhaden in Shem. Millacd are the flashes you are seeing on graph? Suspended over channel? Does time of day matter?
All we found in late afternoon was finger mullet. But the graph was showing a lot of something coming back in well after dark.
Thanks

No, you can see them flashing just under the surface. It helps if you are wearing grey polarized sunglasses. If you know their “flicht!” sound at all… the ■■■■■ they make when they surface… then start looking around your boat. If you can hear them, there’s a strong chance you are already on top of them.

the key is locating menhaden. who knows where they are now. as already mentioned, finding menhaden can be tricky, but a few ways to do it: while under power, look for flicks on the water and approach slowly and throw a large net over that spot when you get close enough. Or sometimes when it’s quiet, you’ll hear the menhaden before you see them. It’s an unmistakeable “flicht” sound. sometimes I swear I hear them, but I don’t see where they flicked the surface so I’l throw and still catch a few despite not seeing them. A third way to find them is watching for silvery flashes 3-4 feet below the surface and casting at it. Some people get fancified and use sidescan or fishfinders to locate them although I’ve never had much luck with that.
also, use a big net with a lot of lead and large mesh. menhaden are fast and need a big, heavy, fast net or they will swims out
i have found them mostly in the middle of shem. usually daytime. haven’t noticed a particular time of day
