Bait

Hello everyone this is a 2 part question. What would be about the most herring I should put in a Vest 20 gal. tank, and also just wondering about how many doz. most people go through on a fishing trip. Thanks

That can be answered 10 different ways by 5 different people…lol…I have put as many as 8-10dz in a 20gal tank (very crowded) but 5-6dz work great.

Depends how the fish are biting but I never go out with less than 6dz to fun fish with. I go out with 50 single baits for a tournament. But that also depends on the time of year and how many rods you are using and your style of fishing. Never go with less than 10dz if I cut bait (which is very rare).

The avg person running 6-10rods usually gets 4-6dz if they have more than 1 person on the boat. If your by yourself throw the bait man a 20$ Bill and take what u can get for that.

I fish alone 95% of the time. Usually I get 2-3dz in my 15-18 gal. home made tank. I’ve put as many as 5 dozen in it with no problems.

With Chip on this one…six dozen in 20 gallon creek bank no problem…

I read an article the other night that recommended adding Hydrogen Peroxide to the tank. It release more oxygen in the water and super charges the bait.
Anyone ever try it? I’m thinking about trying it.

Since we’re talking about bait & tanks. Is it possible to keep bait overnight? I plan on fishing Sunday and possibly Monday as well. I thought that I could save some time (not having to get up as early) by by-passing the bait shop Monday morning, if I can keep bait in my tank from Sunday. I’d thought about heading to the Hope Ferry landing when I’m done Sunday & putting fresh, cold, Saluda River water in the tank, and adding some more salt. And of course, leaving my pump & bubbler on overnight. Any thoughts?

It will work Bob. Some people have great results and some don’t do to well. Would just try it and see how your luck is.

I personally don’t like to keep herring over night but have done it and had zero issues. Leave your lid open or at least a good Crack in it.

You should be ok as long as you change the water out. I have done it before.

It would help to add a little Prime and foam off to the water before you go to bed. I have done the same thing with the Saluda water. I used to go at lunch to get my bait. I would go to the river and back down the ramp to pump in the water. Then go to Lake World for bait. The bait did much better in the fresh, cold, oxygen rich water.
