Bait

Wondering if any of you guys have ever used a pinfish trap to catch bait for bottom fishing? I’ve seen a bunch if guys in Florida do it but not here yet. Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks

For bottom 60-95 ft., all you need is squid and maybe some baitfish you can pull up on sabikis at the cans. You might pull up PF on sabiki rigs. You don’t need to catch bait here for bottom fishing. Hope this helps.

Unless I am mistaken I believe pinfish traps are still illegal in SC waters. If I’m wrong, I am certain someone will be along to correct me.

During parts of the year pinfish is the grouper bait of choice

Pinfish traps are indeed illegal in SC (unless something has changed recently). From my limited experience I’ve found they are still used frequently though -

Gotcha. I appreciate your help

Bonzo goes trout fishing, catches only pinfish…not the targeted species…wonder why the traps are illegal?

Go Cougs!

Whole mullet fresh or frozen (3-6 inches) work real well. Seems to cull out the undersize fish. I used some I netted in the surf the day before last Sept. and only had to throw 1 undersized fish back.

I’d rather fish than eat.
