Baitcasters

OK so I got a $50 gift card for Amazon.com and am thinking about getting a baitcaster reel. Never had one before. Any suggestions in that price range?

Thx

Abu Garcia = Ambassadeur

I have Shimano Citica, three Shimano Curadas, two Ambassadors (C3 and C4) , two Revos, and Diawa Millionaire. The Ambassador C3 (mine is all silver) was the least expensive of the lot and I would think it would be fine in salt water. Some of the Ambassadors have a push button release on the right side, so you can only cast with right hand. I prefer to cast both left and right, so the push button can be limiting. The Ambassadors are not very good for light lures such as grubs. The are great for a Caroline rig or a flounder rig…anything with some weight. You will need at least something like the Shimano Citica for casting most artificial lures. Mine Citica cost $100 several years ago at Charleston Angler, but they are around $120 now.

I’d suggest either a low-end Shimano or an Ambassador. I’m partial to Shimanos. They cast really well. The downside is that the little brake tabs wear out and can be hard to find (to replace).

ambassador 5500 c3 all the way, the silver one. got two and a 6500 which has a clicker. easier to cast than the low profile ones and hold much more line. Also, they are easy to pick out your back lashes and if you are new to baitcasters this can be an issue. Plus it is a wonderful reel as a “first baitcaster”. I have one that was made in 1983 and its been fished in the salt since day one. got a newer one (1990’s), which was my first baitcaster, and you can tell that the older ones are better. Still both are great reels and i love them.

my favorite two reels the ones that are always on board are curado 300’ s they are so smoooth they throw a 1/8 oz jig as far as you need to throw and you not have a birds nest to work with as with open face reels I have come full circle from bait cast to open face and now back to bait cast and braded line lure control on the bait cast is by far better than open face. thats my take on the subject
