I’m working on my Christmas list and want a new reel (or 2). What is a “baitfeeder” reel and how does it differ from a regular spinning reel?
Thanks

Pretty sure it just refers to a reel that has a switch reducing drag to a light pull and sometimes engaging a clicker. So you can set it down without worrying about a fish snatching it or feeling the hook and letting go. Very useful if you are a multi-rod fisherman.
Conventional rods work similarly.
First, Most, Biggest
It has 2 drag systems.
One is very light. When the fish grabs it and takes off, there is minimal resistance. Mostly there to let you know you have a fish on.
Pick up the pole and get ready. Then flip to the primary drag and fight the fish.
I’ve had multiple Shimano bait runners, and could not once ever remember using the bait runner feature. Plenty of other high-quality reels out there that don’t have that feature.

Okay guys, thanks for the explanation and the input. Never owned one before so wasn’t sure what the difference was.

The baitrunner is awfully good for surf fishing where you set up multiple rods and then wait. Unless you have the baitrunner feature, you gotta loosen up the drag so a big red does not take your outfit into the Atlantic. Then when you are bit you gotta tighten the drag
to fight the fish. With the baitrunner feature engaged, the fish can strip line without feeling resistance. You pick up the rod, flip the baitrunner toggle and it is on. I do not use baitrunner reels inshore, but I have one that is mighty handy in the surf.
If you prefer spinn over bait cast you’ll love them, there all I use now.

Df,
I have 4 Shimano Bait runners that I use constantly and I love them. The bait runner feature is a lighter secondary drag that disengages when you turn the handle to reel in line. When you turn the handle the reel will switch to the main drag and allow you to fight the fish. Baitrunners are my go to reel when fishing with big live bait.
