If mahi are the same thing as dolphin then 12 packs are fine. When hungry they will eat a lot of things big and small, with meat and without, etc.

small and meds…better chance on the hookset with smalls

I use the medium size. That size fits my lure/hook setup the best.

What Sells said.

Smalls can be a little harder with chin weghts but like Sells said better chance for hook ups, all I use are mediums.

I’ve seen 200lb blue marlin eat a pee-wee ballyhoo and I’ve seen a 14lb dolphin eat a 2lb dolphin. The smaller dolphin was so big, the tail was curled inside of the stomach cavity and buldging out to the side. In these parts, most of the “dolphin fishermen” are using the mediums. They are way easier to rig than the small and more durable (you can pull them almost all day long without them fouling or washing out). The smaller the balleyhoo, the more fragile that they tend to be and could be a very frustrating endeavor for you.

If you are asking this question, then the medium balleyhoo is the one that you want to pull because of those reasons.

Also, keep in mind what you are doing. Gamefish in this area are not eating balleyhoo as their main forage. When you pull a medium size balleyhoo for dolphin, you are really trying to mimick a flying fish swimming on the surface. Flying fish definitely range in size around here, but a medium balleyhoo looks like a “standard” size flyer. Of course, sometimes you see tiny little flyers, or great big ones, but you see a pretty good mix and the medium balleyhoos will have you covered 90% of the time.

Very well put Skinneej
