I have always heard its bad luck to carry bananas on board the boat. I was just watching Wicked Tuna and the f/v “Lisa and Jake” was riding offshore with a bunch of bananas on the helm. Maybe its a SC thing?
Nope, pretty universal. Maybe they aren’t the superstitious types. I am sure there really is no validity to such a superstition as even with no bananas on board, I don’t really tear it up. But, why take any chances?
I ain’t doin’ it. I’ve had two experiences where bananas ruined the day. That’s all I need. It’s standard pre-launch discussion for me now. I don’t even allow banana boat lotion. Unless it is already on a lady…

My captain friend in guatemala brought bananas two days in a row. The first day we went 3 for 8. The next day 1 for 13. I asked him about the banana thing and he said he always has them on board at home where he is a very successful charter captain in Atlantic Beach NC.
Old wives tale that came from back when they used to transport bananas in crates on ships. Spider, snakes, etc came out of the crates as they were packaged with the bananas. I still never take bananas…

I have always heard it is due to the fact that Bananas release something that cause other fruits and vegetable to ripen faster, thus leaving a crew with rotten food

Same I’ve heard. The last thing you want is to be on a boat with Brazilian wandering spiders running about. Look at the terrifying effects… Not what you’d want to deal with on a sea voyage.

Tight Line and Gutwrench are correct- put a bunch of unripe bananas next to very ripe bananas and the unripe bananas will speed up the process- they release a gas that causes other fruit to ripen faster so huge supplies of food would go bad and many people would die of disease and starvation when big ships were discovering America in 1500’s- I had several horrible trips with bananas brought on boat as well and they are not allowed or you WALK THA PLANK!!
