hello everybody! first time poster, just got stationed in charleston and im looking for some places to get my line wet. ive grown up fishing trout streams. lakes and rivers for cats in WV. i fish atleast 5 days a week, if the wife lets me and the kids out of the house, so far ive spent some time at folly pier and the naval weapons station. ive caught a few reds and alot of trout so far, but i really would love to get into a pile of these giant SC catfish… the fishing here is alot different than im used to, but im learning to fish the tides and bait selection pretty quickly, (best i can without a boat anyway)
i am a big fish enthusiast! would love to find out some tips on surf fishing for sharks too…
any tips or locations would be much appreciated!
probably gonna hit up folly pier tomorrow afternoon after work (heard a rumor that there may still be a few spanish roaming around)
happy fishing everybody!
For catfish you need to move closer to freshwater up in the Cooper or in the Santee Lakes.
As far as bank fishing goes you just gotta put in your time and find areas where you can - legally park, not trespassing, not going to get stuck up to your chest in pluff mud. There are some really good spots to fish from the bank. Some of these are widely known to all and some are not. Some of the most widely known places are:
Folly Beach Pier
North End of Folly Beach
Shem Creek Park
Mt. Pleaseant Waterfront Park
Pitt Street Bridge in Mt. P
Under Cosgrove Bridge
South End of Sullivans Island
North Charleston Riverfront Park
Narcosis
Can you get on the coast guard pier downtown? Always wanted to fish that in the fall for bruiser sheeps!!! If you can, I will gladly tag along and show you how to smoke a few big boys.
Weapons Station is the best I have found.
Bravo can offer some good sized reds, trout, sheeps, and cats. Just caught a small catfish earlier this week.
The first 45min of the initial incoming tide. They seem to follow the wall of water as it works upstream.
Better luck with cats at the Coast Gard Station on Goose Creek, thats if security doesnt run you off. (hit/miss). Again, as the incoming tide shifts.
Alpha pier can also produce, but haven’t fished that much.
here some site you can look at.http://www.southcarolinalakes.net/Lake_Marion.html
catch big cats at the Rediversion canal. free fishing off the banks.
Thanks everybody I really appreciate it… I’m in the coast guard and can fish pretty much anywhere near the weapons station and the old naval base in north Charleston where my boat is stationed… I guess all I need is for somebody with a boat to come pick me up!
I thought you asked about fishing from shore? Why would you need a boat? Anyways, at low tide walk out on the pier behind the CG parking lot. Look left. Reds will hangout there waiting for the tide to shift.
If you don’t see them, they aren’t there. Usually in a small school less than 10. Make sure you have a way to safely get them up on the pier and lowered back in.
These are all over slot reds.
I’m only giving away this info because security keeps running us off and the unprivileged cant fish that pier anymore.
Good luck.
Well email me and I’m sure if I go with you, it won’t be a problem. There is no better way for me to learn, I would love it!
I would like go have the boat for tournament fishing…
I hit up pier bravo on the weapons station for a short spell today and the area looks promising
And by the way, I found a great website to order line… just got 1000yds of 120lb braid for 65$ !! I hooked a nice marlin on my last patrol in the Caribbean and my 50 lb mono couldn’t cut it… I’ll be ready this time around…
