Barely offs...wish we didn't have 40 miles of sand

Catch all your live bait 1-2 miles from land, Catch your billfish within a couple miles of your bait spot.

And yes they were surprised to hear that in SC they “stay in the water”. Actually 6/7 that day were released in the water.

Looking good fellas. Where abouts is this?

and tell us again why Ben didn’t get tossed overboard? :))

It is illegal to remove a billfish from the water for a picture in the SAFMC unless you are going to kill it. Maybe you are somewhere else? And holding a fish like that might remove some of its’ protective slime which puts it at risk after release. Just saying!

I’m going to go out on a limb and say it wasn’t around here… If it was South Florida I would expect to see a ton of high rises on land…

guessing this is the 1/7 that didn't stay in the water, as per the comment in the OP after the picture.

  • the captain ( a renowned professional tournament fisherman) made the call to boat, photo, release my son’s first sailfish. Indeed left some slime on my hands and coat. Left the decision to the “professional” who fishes there nearly every day for > 35 yrs. He was surprised by my SC view.
  • Ben deferred the sailfish leap given the low 60’s temps- winds 25-30, and waves 6-10 ft over 3 days. Water was 73- he was more afraid we wouldn’t get him back into the boat. This is the same kid that did his “ice bucket challeng” in the ocean in Alaska last year.

So you would have been OK with it if he said they threw in in a cooler as opposed to releasing it after handling it?

I know nothing about bill fishing, but do enjoy reading the offshore reports and just trying to understand the logic of your post.

Folks, Don’t worry about the faux pas. After > 8yrs on this. website ,having seen many a sailfish post, I knew some of the responses in advance. Even weighed choosing a video post of sails jumping in lieu of still shot in boat.
I think this captaiin’s light tackle acumen saves many a released fish.
Just great to experience such a fishery so CLOSE to shore vs the SC coast. I haven’t spent much time on the water in the keys since the 70’s and it was great to be back.
In the same distance the 50-60 ft sporties travel from marina to ledge, I won’t even have made it to the jetties from Ripley Light…

Nice fishing, congrats!

That's got a lot to do with why our bottom fishery is so much better than theirs, but everybody knows that. Nice fish, can't blame ya for wanting a picture of the young man's first sail.

If you thought that was great. Go to Costa Rica. Probably costs the same, The sails are twice the size. Yeah…you gotta run 20 miles but who cares. The beer is cold, and the weather is hot. You could ace those winter coats. Nice fish though. Oh yeah …google Casino CoCal also. Better than the VMA awards…ha ha…

Our next trip will be marlin. Had a blue marlin Bermuda trip planned last July but had to postpone. Looking at a pacific side of Central America for a trip soon.
Son usually only gets 4-5 days off for vacation.

Congrats to your son! I grew up in south fla and while its nice to have that short run I prefer to fish here. Its nice not having to bob and weave around 200+ boats almost every trip out. Plus the fishing is better up here (outside of the sailfish run in the winter).
