BARF 08

Looking forward to it again this year Yak…y’all did a great job last year with it!..any up dates?

Mud

Already looking forward to it. Do know that I can’t wait to get back in the yak fishing. Have done a little bit of fishing off the dock but just not the same.

Yak has already been telling me some of his plans and they sound pretty good. Do think we need to open up the fishing to all of Beaufort. The lagoon is just getting to much preasure. Even talked to a couple of the park rangers a couple weeks ago and they agreed with the fact that the lagoon is fishing differently now.

Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked into jet air intakes

Plans are still in infancy… I am also looking for volunteers to help set this thing up…

Plans so far are to have a entry fee of around $25.00, which will get a T-Shirt and Frogmore Stew dinner… All proceeds will go to the Waddell Maritime Research Facility Seatrout Project.

Fishing is to be open to all waters of Beaufort County, since I have not heard back from anyone in Charleston (Hint: DolphinDave) to even start widening the area to include their waters.

Instead of Hunting Island for the Captain’s Meeting/Awards Ceremony, I am looking at some more centralized locations… The Port Royal Oyster Roast Pavillion behind the Port Royal Elementary School is one location, another is the Farmers Market near the Naval Hospital. What I am looking for is a centralized low/no cost location with electricity and easy access.

The competition will be a Catch-Photo-Release only. If you choose to catch and keep, you still have to submit a photo to win.

As for prizes… Since no real responses as of yet, I am aiming for Baseball Caps for the Winners of each Category: Flounder, Seatrout, Redfish and Slam. I do not have sponsors yet, and do not see any stepping forward with enough prizes for each category. I do not have three prizes for the placements for the Slam Category like last year.

I am open to suggestions and support…

Only my opinion,
I like the barf the way it was last year… small and personal. We actually get to know each other. The prizes, entry fee, and even the t-shirts don’t mean as much to me as the comradre.
I Probably won’t be leaving the state park grounds. Between the time constraints, gas prices, beer, beer… not worth it.
Let me know if I can help out at the lagoon. Will be doing a fish fry/ smoked fish at the site again.
Really be cool if a bunch of ya’ll got campsites… (could fish 2 days:stuck_out_tongue:)

Cutmullet,

I agree with you about Hunting Island… My problem is this… Several locals have complained about limiting it only to Hunting Island, and about having to drive “All the way out there!”.

Additionally, as you know, the Lagoon cannot handle the pressure… It is getting overfished. Opening it up to all Beaufort County waters allows those who want to win to go fish elsewhere.

My thought about an alternative Captain’s Meeting site / Frogmore Stew location has more to do with logistics, especially Electricity for lighting and for determining the winners.

Us regulars can always have the campsite rendesvous Saturday night after the awards ceremony…

Additionally, it has been recommended to me (By people who have conducted several fishing tournaments) to limit the tournament hours, from all day to a 6 hour fishing window. This allows the participant to get to the awards ceremony with light remaining and more importantly, allows more time for the awards ceremony.

Perhaps 3 hours each side of a tide, or if lucky from dead low to dead high or vice versa… I will have to look at the tides…

Troy, I feel the same way, one, the lagoon is over fished. Two, the water around Beauford should be included. Is there anyway yo have two capt. meetings? To come from out of town and go to the state park, set up your camp site and then to go back to Beauford for a captain's meeting, and then back to the park....that's a lot of driving!

Just to make sure I have the correct day, the BARF should be Nov 7&8 Nov. below are the tides for those dates.

Agree that we should have a time limit but rather than three hours each side we should establish a check-in time of say 17:00. Think having a start time might be a little more difficult. How would we monitor it, and if someone wants to be out earlier that is fine but they still have to be back in time for checkin.

Troy I will help you find some prizes for the different winners. Saw T at Low County Marine and it sounds like he is willing to donate some prizes. Don’t think the girls at higher ground would have an issue either. Have an idea for the slam prize but still need to check with the donor. Also know that the rangers at Hunting Island voiced and intrest in being involved. Maybe we could get a couple season passes from them.

In regards to location I don’t think we will find a location that will make everyone happy. The kayak population of Beaufort has increased and we should have more locals this year. That being the case it would be nice to have a central location that will be easier for everyone to attend. I might know of a location on the water that would work well, and is east to get to. Let me check it out and will let you know.

Hey cutmullet my name is Matthew Hogan and you work with my dad Pat at Bosch. He told me you’al are going to beaufort. Would be interested in going. Just tell me when.

Wow, looking forward to this. I have been wanting to camp at Hunting Island for a while, and the fishing is a bonus. I will be coming down from the upstate.

Matt, I will be “pre-fishing” the lagoon Oct.31 & Nov.1, then going back Nov 6-9th for the BARf.
If your interested in camping, get a site close to …127

Mudroc,

I have contemplated the two Captain’s Meeting idea, as well as the two weigh in station concept.

The logistics for the former is doable, the latter a little more complex, requiring two computers and a network link… To a official site to have the pictures evaluated side by side…

S1TPilot and I are looking into both concepts… I am trying to get with DolphinDave to see if he and Hadrell’s are doing anything this year. I have some ideas to bounce off of them.

I like s1tpilot’s idea of an established check in time/unofficial start time…just pick up an official ruler after dark at capts meeting …then … game on !! at first light/whenever you can make it.
Also like dual site option …for Capt’s meeting at least.
