BARF Fall Tournament

YotF and I have been talking and working on the details about the annual BARF tournament this fall. I’m sure must of you recall that last year was a bit disappointing with the turnout compared to the amount of work T and Mark have put into the event in years past. This year we are working on different prize options and will be giving people a captain’s bag.
We are talking about doing a month long tournament with the final day incorporating an awards banquet and Frogmore stew. I understand a few people are already thinking about spending that weekend at Hunting Island.

Last couple years we have lost money and we would prefer to stop that trend. We have always kept the registration fee pretty low and then made up the difference. I know that things are tight for a lot of people this year but I believe we need to increase the registration to $50.00. So far this year the least expensive tournament that I’ve fishing was $75 dollars. So while $50 might be a bit much for some, I think the tournament should at least support enough to pay for itself.

We will be working on a website for the tournament this year and hope to have it up soon.

Could we have a small informal poll and see how many people would not be willing to pay $50.00 to fish the tournament.
If anyone else has suggestions or comments we would like to hear them and if anyone else would like to offer some help we would jump on that also.

Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked into jet air intakes

I understand the need to do this and not talking about recouping money for expenditures, because we could have a tournament based on pictures, honesty, witness with little- if any payout. The reason, I feel, some want a “real” tournament is to get more to attend.
But…where is the comradre in a month long tournament fishing different places? What about the guys/gals coming from out of town( odds wouldn’t be the same for all). Personally I would rather have 10-20 fishing together than 100 fishing apart.
That being said-I want to pay for my t-shirt, share of food, and small donation to a good cause.

Ya’ll are my friends and if you decide to do this, I can probably find 50 clams.

I am from pretty far out of town, but always make a redfish trip in late fall to the HI area. The tournament sounds fun, and would like to pick yalls brains some, but it would be at best a fri-mon type of thing for me. Work gets in the way of most fun things (but these days I’m not complaining). I’ll keep up to date on the thread.

Let me clarify the concept a little bit… Some fo both for you Cutmullet…

The plan is to have a month long fishing competition, with prizes. We are not going to limit to Beaurofrt area, but the whole atlantic coast in redfish, Seatrout and Flounder country… The thought is, we can get far more participation from people in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Savannah, Jacksonville, etc if we expand the range and window…

The award ceremony, get together and feast will be the weekend following the event at Hunting Island or some place similiar.

Plans are to schedule from the Saturday before Columbus Day therough Veteran’s Day, and have the gathering/awards ceremony/feast the following Saturday.

The advantage of this is, everyone could fish around their work schedules and weather, and having a single day gathering would allow for people to be able to drive up attand and return the same day if they desired, or stay and fish, B.S., and tell fish stories all weekend if they wanted too…

My goal is to raise money for Waddell Mariculture Center, and their Seatrout Research Project, with the hopes that they can develope a Seatrout planting program, in a fashion similiar to the ones they currently have for Cobia and Redfish.

T-Shirts, Lowcountry Boil/Frogmore Stew would be available at the after tourney gathering/award ceremony…

Those who can’t fish, spend too much on seafood!

I think it’s silly to have a get together after the fact. Who’s gonna drive more than a couple miles to socialize with a bunch of liars:smiley:

What happened to the camping, fishing, drinking idea? Oh yea… I dropped the ball on that one.
I got an idea! One day tournament, 5$ entry fee, stippers, beer/BBQ afterwards at Troys house and camping for those to sloshed to drive:stuck_out_tongue:

Hey, we can do the fishing and barbeque thing at my place any time. Though with the size, weight and teeeth limit of strippers in South Carolina, we might need to import! Actually I do have a problem with my wife on that last one!

I think the one day meeting after the fact will be for all those who think they are in the running to come to… You are camping out there that weekend anyways, right? The locals can just come out and eat, drink, fish with you,No $5.00 fee!

was wondering,…is this just for peddle boats?..or are kayaks aloud?:sunglasses:

Pedal or Paddle… No motors allowed (Unless physicaly handicapped, which can get exceptions.)

You are asking for an exception I take it. Right Mudroc?

was just wondering how long it would be until you posted…that is since you have a pedle boat:smiley:

Guys this was started for people to voice their opinion about the FALL BARF. The fact that only 4 people have decided to contribute is rather sad.
IF you have an idea you would like to have considered we need to hear from you. We only have a few months to pull all this together. We need to develope a straegic plan and then follow it.

I don’t won’t us to take on more than we can handle and then do a half ass job.
I think at this close to the date we need to keep it simple and manageable.

I believe opening up the tournament to the east coast just adds an amount of work that is un-realistic. If the goal is to raise as much money for Waddel we should let 321 Fish run the event and they will distribute the cash winnings and send a check to Waddell.

From what I gather is that most people would prefer a simple tournament and with the awards and frogmore out at hunting island. I think the more we have people driving from hunting island to the waddel center we will loose a lot of paicipants.

Think we should go back to a local event and something we can manage.

Again your opinion matters and we would like to hear it.

Aa I stated when talking to you yesterday… What extra work is there to opening up to the whole east coast? Seriously?

Additionally, since there are a number of existing tournaments in that time frame, competing with them, especially when they have larger prizes and a more loyal and active fishing community, means they will atend their tourneys, and not ours…

If an angler has a limited budget, and they spend the majority of it on the big tourneys in Jacksonville, Savannah, etc, they are not going to have the money to enter ours and travel here to camp/hotel and fish…

My solution is to make it roughly a month long, and they can use any fish they catch in the other tournaments, to qualify for this one. The extra cost is only the entry fee. No gas, hotel/campground, etc… In these economic times, this is a fact of life for most people.

I have found out, that anglers are more loyal to their own clubs tournaments than other clubs… When we are competing against GKFA, JKFA, TKAA and others at the same time, we are on the short end of the stick.

Hell, we can’t even get people from other parts of South Carolina, who didn’t fish in these other tournaments to attend ours…

Why a whole month?

  1. I do not want the tourney attendance to be destroyed by bad weather. A full month gives a window to negotiate around weather.

  2. Herding Cats…ie getting one single date, when everyone can get free from work, home and familial obligations, makes it harder to get everyone to one location.

In closing, I do not think Beaufort or South Carolina are ready for a Tournament, by itself, of the size we desire… We need to pull from other areas, and unfortunately, these other areas are already having their own tournaments… Larger, with huge prizes, and Kayak Fishing Clubs that are far more active and supportive of the cause.

T,

I respect your opinion and was just trying to offer some suggestions and ideas to help the BARF participation grow. I do think you should contact 321Fish and let them handle the logistics of the tournament since they do this on a regular basis. You would also be able to drop the entry fee to a price you find more acceptable and not do the prizes or Captains Bags. Just give a portion of the cash back as purse money to the top three slams. That way we don’t have to worry about shipping a kayak to VA or FL and the other logistics of getting prizes to the winners.

Where excatly is this tournament going to be held. Time, dates, places, anyone?

Thats what we are discussing/ deciding/ arguing about right now…

well… most of us anyway…

Talked with Cutmullet earlier…

S1TPilot, sorry if I came across as upset or hostile… That was not my intention. I just wanted to put out vision of what I think it should be…

Have you tought of keeping BARF the way is was? and maybe holding another tournament at a different time of year? I could be wrong, but I think a lot of people that have fished BARF and have camped at Hunting Island enjoyed that everything was held there and weren’t big on fees and a lot of rules. Plus it was laid back…come as you can, fish as you can and brag all you want.

Yep, which is why I was trying to have the Tournament seperate, and before the BARF Gathering at Hunting Island… The time of the year (Oct-Nov) is best for a tournament here…

Trying to have my cake, and eat it too…

cutmullet has it figured out…the more complicated and costly you make anything the less enjoyable it is for everyone.
I’ll agree with this,
