Barge on stilts

I went out to the jetties today and saw this barge or tug type thing up on stilts. It was just outside the channel at about the second set of cage bouys past the mouth of the jetties.
Anyone know what this is about?

Perhaps they’re passing through didn’t want to pay the transient dockage fees at one of the marinas.

Oil exploration!

very smooth way to fish, how much do those poles cost?

That’s a drill rig. You can see the white derick on the deck. They use a jack up barge like that for stability. Wonder what they are drilling for…

Probably core samples. Drill rig isn’t big enough for much else! Maybe pre-dredging samples:question:

They are collecting geotechnical cores for dredge material. They should be around for about a month.

(**(), I’m smart:wink:

Now you can stop for coffee on the way offshore. I think its a new Starbucks store.

OMG! It’s an offshore oil rig! Get your checkbooks out, soon the economy will be flowing at full steam and the harbor will be full of 200lb yellowfin tuna!!!

</sarcasm>

I just want to fish around it

Why did that post pop up again?

Miss River Rat is correct. State Port Auth and Army Corps drilling samples for wide/deepening project. They will be moving almost daily throughout the entrance channel.
