Bass/Bream Fly Rod

I am new to fly fishing, bought my first setup about three months ago. I have an 8 weight BVK that I use in the salt. The problem is most of the time I am on the polling platform while others get to do the fishing. (which is cool too)

It suddenly dawned on me I live in between two freshwater rivers and have access to several ponds, why not terrorize bass and bream during the week?? I will mostly be fishing rivers and some of the ox bow lakes near by.

So my question is what set up would be my best bet? Weight/model ect. Money is not a major issue, though I don’t want to spend money just to spend it.

Thanks in advance.

I use an inexpensive 3/4 wt Albright fly rod with poppers and its big fun catching bass and bream on topwater with them. My boy and I hit some golf course ponds nearby and have a blast going fish for fish. Its a nice way to unwind for an hour after a day of work. Albright is constantly having sales and you can get a decent combo for ~ $100

Check with www.theFiberglassManifesto.com and check out the Eagle Claw Featherlites(in their store)…5/6# is a fun little rod for your suggested purpose.

Just a thought, picked one up for that excact purpose

I’d stick with the 8wt for bass… true you do not need an 8wt to fight the bass, a 4wt will be plenty but if you want to throw bigger poppers and heavier flies for bigger bass you’ll need at least an 8wt to contend with the air resistance of the big flies.

Now if you are just throwing small poppers like a Poppin Mary or something then the 4-6wt is perfect. Landing bream on an 8wt is not really a fight bit I have had some big bream put a good bend in my 8wt tho.

Still have the 3 wt

Thanks for all the info.

Maybe what I need to think about is using my 8wt for bass and look at getting something separate to go after bream. What weight would be good for bream? Maybe Rapchizzle’s 3wt?

Rapchizzles 3wt would be PERFECT for bream and it’s a good deal too… The reel alone is worth $150! the rod is a great rod and the line is good too… this will have you hooked up to beat up some bream…

I used to think an 8 weight was needed for bass but I prefer fishing for them with a 5 or 6. I find you simply don’t catch enough big bass to warrant the 8. My go to freshwater rod is a St. Croix Legend Ultra 6 with a Rio Smallmouth bass line. Perfect all around pond rod for bass, catfish, gar, carp etc.

I only suggest 8wt for bass for throwing those big azz deer hair poppers and BIG patterns… yes you can throw them wiht a 6wt but it is much easier with an 8wt… I use a 6wt rod for bass but I am throwing smaller clousers, zoo cougars, EP minnows and buggers. I have also caught 3-lb bass on my 2wt and had a blast but I wasn’t throwing any thing big…
