Bass OTF

What do you peple use for bass(largemouth)? Im lookin to catch some.

Got him!!!

I have been using a GIANT wooly bugger I tied up. Dk Olive with a white stripe on the bottom and an olive maribou tail on a worm hook 2/0 think. Hooking a lot of them but when they go deep they throw the hook no matter how hard I se tit or sharp it is… I also used one I tied up, same pattern except I used dk olive and yellow altenating around the body, both with a small hackle (typical baitfish pattern) and those have done well. I hear a lot about poppers but I can’t spin the deer hair right so I gave up and went with baitfish patterns. I have also tied up some crawdad patterns that are working.

This one is small but put up agreat fight, caught him on the yellow and olive bugger pattern…

Most any type of Top Water bug, slider or gurggler is tuff to beat early and late this time of year. In addition most any bait fish or craw fish imitation will also work well. Try to have a few that are weighted and a few unweighted so you can fish differnect parts of the water column. Boogers will also work well as will clousers. Just try to match the hatch and have a few hot colors for reaction bites. If you find yourself in a lot of grass try a smaller shrimp pattern. Best of luck.

thanks, lokking to stay away from poppers, all they do is piss me off. They dont turn over, and usually DONT POP!!! I have a really good pond for them. and they get up in shallow water and are really easy to catch. BTW, got 4 today, 2 on GULP worm, 2 on spinner bait.

Got him!!!

Gummy minnow, blue/silver - Very productive for me in the past.

The trouble with ignorance is that it picks up confidence as it goes along.

Try a Dahlberg diver. I have done well with them on the largemouths.

If you are having trouble turning over larger flies you may need to upsize your line and try a manufactured tapered leader for bass or saltwater, they are a bit stiffer and have the mass to handle the larger flies. If the fish are fairly shallow and it’s not real grass or weedy a bait fish looking booger, clouser or deceiver should do the trick. Clouser also make a floating minnow that works well. The other idea would be to use a Sea Ducer which is a larger profile salt water patter but if you are having trouble getting you popper to turn over it could be a bit more challenging with some of the larger flies as well. The other thought is to pick up a heavier weight fly rod for the bigger stuff. Something in the 9 to 10 weight range should do the trick. The lighter rods are great for lighter applications and limited wind conditions however if you have to punch a big fly through a 10 to 20 mph blow, it ain’t likely to happen with a 5, 6, 7 or 8 weight I’ve even seen conditions when it’s tough to turn one over with a good 9 weight. Anyway best of luck playing around with what works best for you style of casting.

THanks.

JMB-I have a 9 foot eight weight, its not so much that they dont turn over, its that they dont pop and just spinn and dive a little bit. Very annoying. I also dont have room to cast. I can cast a copperhead to a redfish 50 feet away on a flat, but you dont have room to cast in my pond. Im gonna try putting my yak in and casting from the middle to the sides, instead of from the sides to the middle.

Got him!!!

I mainly throw topwater stuff…but if its hot or the fish are just deeper I throw clousers, decievers, buggers, Double bunnies, leach patterns etc. Also when throwing poppers use a non slip mono loop connection it helps the poppers-POP. I find that 90% of the takes on topwater are right when it hits the water.
Goodluck

Try using a stinger hook for your divers, topwater, and subsurface. They set and hold well and are long enough to tie larger bass patterns.

Here’s a couple of additional thoughts on the presentation if it’s close quarter combat try to pick up or make ya a cheap stripping basket then shoot the line opposed to false casting so much. The other idea would be to roll cast if the weeds permit. Either way stay after it to ya get the bait where you want it…if you can put it on the head of a big ole red you shouldn’t have any trouble with their little black bass brothern! As for a top water alternative try one of the Hellbay Hoppers or Crease Minnows at the Angler. The Gummies should also work well. Tight line and tight loops!

I have had alot of luck with an olive wooly booger. Also been succesful with the poppers although with this heat they have been eating the wet flys more readily.

I still think mine is bigger Trueblue

You may have me. Yours was a real pig. Those slingers are a hell of a lot of fun on a three weight though.

Yeah… I think he topped the scales out at about 6 ounces! WHOO HOO! The smaller ones fight a lot beter, lots of jumping and running, like a bow. The bigger ones I have hooked just pull REAL hard and run deep…

I’d be lucky if mine made five. Provides some evening fun when you don’t have time to get out on the Saltwater.

caught my biggest large mouth to date on a bumble bee pattern in a wild dunes golf course pond. didnt weigh it but it was pushing 8lbs.

6ft. Does the management frown on fishing the course ponds. I have always wanted to try it and was unsure as to the legality?

sorry Im late. try an puglisi bluegill pattern. deadly on the bass, Im not sure who stocks them here but try theflyshop.com
