This may explain the sudden stop on construction of the Cabelas at Nexton
Pretty soon there will just be Shopco, a subsidiary of Walmart. The kids and I like to visit the BP in Myrtle Beach but we seldom buy anything. Their brand of fishing stuff is quite cheap (in quality) and you almost never find anyone that works there that has any real fishing knowledge. This kind of consolidation isn’t good for consumers in the long run.

I was in Bass Pro of Concord about a week ago. Four employees spoke to me. Only one asked if she could help me find what I was looking to buy. The other three asked if I wanted to get a Bass Pro credit card. I politely refused and told them it was probably my last time shopping there, that my local stores had similar pricing and better service. They do have a great selection, but most of the employees don’t seem to know squat about fishing or customer service.
I agree, shop the true and tried Haddrell’s?

A better idea for what, consumers having more than one or two shopping options? Consumers shopping at a store that sells quality goods AND has staff that is knowledgeable and has some expertise?

If Bass Pro Shops buys Cabelas they will ruin it . The service at Bass Pro is horrible and the quality of their store branded clothes and shoes are not as good as the Cabelas branded goods .
Interesting. Didn’t know that construction had halted on Cabela’s.
Good news for the local shops in the short term anyway.

Customer Service is that way by design. I had a very good friend that used to work for BPS and he said they are instructed to make customers seek them out as opposed to approach customers to see if they need assistance.
That being said, big box is big box so i don’t see how one would “ruin” the other. Crap is crap no matter how you cut it. Other than where they’re from and the decor inside, BPS and Cabelas read from the same sheet of music. They target tourist money and they would rather sell you something with their label on it than a high-end firearm or fishing product because they’re making 80 points on that. BPS does over $4 billion per year while Cabela’s does just over $1 billion. While neither is anything to sneeze at, you don’t do over $4 billion per year if you have a tendency to “ruin” things.

If BPS buying Cabela’s is limiting your shopping options, you really need to get out more. The Charleston/Mt Pleasant area has more than enough well-stocked local stores that run circles around big box stores like BPS and Cabela’s. If that’s someone’s basis for a shopping experience, they’re really selling themselves short.

By design dose not mean its the right way as does the amount of business they do and the quality of their products. Bass Pro does more in sales because they have more stores not because Cabela’s is not a quality company. The shopping experience is far better at Cabela’s than Bass Pro. But with all this being said I run a local business and I spend my money locally as much as I can, there are just some things that you have to outsource and in my opinion Cabela’s is a better business. Just my opinion .
I agree but I didn’t see where anyone said it was the “right” way, just the way they’re instructed.
Personally, Bass Pro and Cabela’s are one in the same except for the fact that Johnny Morris made a better decision when he refused to go public and remain privately owned. Cabela’s took a big hit on their “outpost” (smaller stores) concept. That and the fact they were more interested in showing their investors (since they’re publicly traded) larger volume numbers and lost focus on the actual bottom line returns.
If one feels Cabela’s is “better” based on their shopping experience, that’s fine, but to look at this from a business standpoint would suggest otherwise.
No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.
Well put bangstick, I do feel the shopping experience is better simply because when you go into a department that requires actual knowledge of the products that person is selling they know something about it. I have found that at BPS this is not always the case. My main point is not based off bottom line performance its quite clear Johnny Morris has built an empire, it kind of reminds me of Walmart the way he has done it though.
What’s the latest on the N. Charleston Bass Pro Shop that was supposed to open in August 2015? I cannot find any info on it on google.

My understanding is they backed out…again…several months ago. Don’t know if this latest news will impact that at all.
