BassPro aquarium Concord, NC- Redfish?

I thought I was seeing things. While watching the bowfin, gar, crappie, catfish, and bass in the Concord, NC aquarium at Bass Pro a redfish swims by.
I though I must be mistaken, but it looks just like a redfish without spots.
When I got home I did a quick search and it was a redfish.

Makes sense since they are brackish water fish, but I didn’t realize they tolerated completely fresh water.

Apparently there are lakes in Texas that are stocked with them. Makes me wonder about what’s swimming around in the Santee Cooper lakes.

Yep…we used to target them up the Trent river in NC. It was more fresh than brackish.

Yes they can live in fresh water; We catch them way up the ashley and cooper, and I have a friend with a fresh water pond in Edisto who raises striper and has some big ol reds in there too. Completely fresh water.

I’ve seen them in the freshwater springs at Crystal River and Homasassa, the water is so fresh you can drink it.

Yep, they even stock them in some fresh water lakes/reservoirs in Texas.

Every now and then, you catch a flounder on a worm while fishing for large mouths way up the east branch of the cooper. Flounder are very tolerant of fresh water also. Pretty cool.

I’ve read that the game and fish people in Texas stock reds in land locked lakes that are over a hundred miles from saltwater. The article that I read said that they can live in freshwater but it makes the fish sterile and they have to restock the lakes every so often.
