Batteries question

What, if any, are the differences between an auto and a marine dual purpose AGM battery?
Also, are there any opinions on Optima batteries?

which ones are you looking at?
I put the Die Hard platinums on my boat.
So far so good, and the price was really good compared to other AGM’s.
Good warrantee too.

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

Marine batteries are designed for a dynamic enviroment, meaning they are vibrasion resistant, Optima is a great battery.

what is your reasoning in using an AGM battery?

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

I have a friend that got me 2 Optima yellow D31’s for a very good price. I was going to use those as trolling batteries since they are too big to fit in the stern battery compartment for starting and accessory battery.

Chris V- I think AGM are just a better battery for my needs. They don’t require the same maintenance, and seem to last longer for me than wet cells.

if you got them cheaper than a regular deep cycle, use them, but I wouldnt pay more for them, unless you NEED a gel battery
that battery weighs just over 59 pounds, with a reserve capacity of 155
a group 27 deep cycle from interstate weigh 53 pounds with a reserve capacity of 160, and cost about $119
true, you cant mount an interstate upside down, and you cant charge it at 100 amps per hour, but short of that…
the interstate deep cycle even has the cool bright green and white color scheme.

Now you just can't argue with that:wink::sunglasses:

Everything I’ve heard about the optima’s is bad.
I was thinking about going with the interstates, but ultimately decided to go for the AGM’s.
So far so good.

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

The cool green and white decal is hard to pass on, but I bought these batteries for what I would have paid for 2 wal-mart 12V batteries.

Thanks for the input too…from what it sounds like, there isn’t a lot of difference between an auto and marine agm.

I dont have anything bad to say about optima, they are just expensive, like all the gel batteries, and if you dont need them, I dont like to spend money where I dont have to.

If you got them that cheap, I would definately use them.

Optima and Interstate both made by Johnson Controls who also make Wal Mart & Sams. Gel batteries are normaly used for places with small space and not heavy use.

Oh really ?

I have 2 yellow tops, dual purpose (D-34/78), they are 6 and 7 years old. I use them for trolling motor and running lights while gigging. they have been pulled down to dead over 200 times, and left to sit w/out charging for months over the winter. I topped them off 2 days ago, and both passed the load test. My point is that I abuse these batteries all summer, probably 5 times the avg persons usage…they are still going strong. it will be hard for me to ever use any other battery

Have an Optima and a “marine” wet cell on my boat.
During this cold spell, the Optima held full charge while the wet cell dropped to 4 volts-almost froze.

Here you go…

Sears AGM=Odyssey AGM

Great battery, great price, great warranty.

Can’t go wrong. My big boat has Odyssey’s.

Triton has Sears AGM’s. I never look at them. I haven’t even put them on the charger at all this year. Fresh and ready to go when I get on the boat.

Sears is the way to go IMHO.
The sears at $189…

the odyssey at >$250:

i have the Odyseys also and love them…tiny, almost like a lawn mower battery!

Optimas are good batteries, but they just don’t have as much load-handling capacity as some regular batters like the Stowaways, etc., per the specs. Never heard anything bad about them other than that they aren’t the best fit for certain applications and that they are expensive. Gel cells are used in mission-critical applications like UPS systems for computer networks because they last a long time. Wet cells seem to give you more charge/load capacity but aren’t as long-living over the long haul. I wouldn’t use Optimas for high-thrust trolling motor that you plan to run in heavy current all day long, because I’d get the highest-capacity batteries I could find for that, but I wouldn’t hesistate to use them for anything else (other than the fact that I am happy with regular batteries and don’t see any need to change or spend any extra money).
