I typically get about 3 yrs from the Wal Mart deep cycle Maxx batteries, double that with Interstate. I do maintain my batteries with an on-board charger, which also helps.
I sell batteries for a living so I will put in my two cents. There are three main manufacturers of flooded lead acid batteries. East Penn(Deka),Exide and Johnson Controls(Interstate). On a regular basis we take in all three makes of batteries and see varying degrees of performance and longevity. You will get opinions on all three makes ranging from the best ever to the worst ever. My suggestion would be to purchase from someone who you feel is going to back up the warranty. Also maintaining a battery by checking the fluid levels and keeping on a trickle charger when not in use will give you the best chance of a long useful life. AGM batteries are going to provide a longer warranty period, but come at a substantial cost increase.
Ferreel,
Any opinion on the DieHard Platinum Marine batteries for use as a trolling motor battery? I use them in my boats to start the motor and love how they can sit for a long time without running down. For a trolling motor, would a regular deep cycle battery be better?
Thanks!

i prefer Deka, I’ve been selling them for a number of years, and have very few issues with them that weren’t owner/operator related
for Johnson Control, which batteries do they make brand wise?
Optima! Johnson Control makes almost all Interstate Batteries!
Jim, I would suggest a deep cycle marine battery as a stand alone solution for your trolling motor, and get a seperat marine cranking battery for the outboard.

Diehard Platinum are made by Odyssey Batteries. These guys got their start designing batteries for the military. They are good batteries. Typically you will give up a little reserve capacity with AGM as opposed to a regular flooded Deep Cycle Battery. That being said, I like the extend warranty that most AGM’s offer. PM me if you want more info or alternative to DieHard.
Thanks Skrimpdaddy and Ferreel for the advice.

Interstate batteries are garbage. My dads bass boat came with them and they only lasted about a year. Replacing three batteries in a year doesn’t seem like a fluke to me. He has the everstart maxx batteries now. They are better.
I’ve got a interstate for my cranking battery and it’s been on the boat for more than 3 years and never had a problem with it. And I have a interstate on my trolling motor and had it for 3 years and never had a problem. I have only used 3 different brands and I’m going to stick with interstate!! Don’t get a ever start battery there junk

I’m thinking most batteries are decent. Chargers and charging practices are a big differentiator.
