Battery Issue?

Tried to put the boat in on Saturday, but the trim sounded weak and the motor would only “click click click” when the key was turned. Pulled the boat back out, cracked the hatch under the console and checked the battery. No corrosion and all wires are tight. Then the key is turned and the motor fires off. Figured that the battery was low, so we put the boat in and let her run about an hour to recharge. She cranked back up several times after being turned off, but the nav and anchor lights would not turn on (GPS, bilge and livewell would all run. The GPS is tied into battery directly, lights and pumps go through the switch panel). Yesterday I got ready to take her out again and checked the motor at the house. Once again, “click click click” and the trim is weak. I crack the hatch and the battery is sweating on the sides. I hooked up the battery charger and the needle would jump from 1/2 charge to full charge and back. After about 5 minutes on the charger, the motor would fire (nav lights working now too). I unhooked the battery from the charger and let it sit overnight. This morning, “click click click” goes the motor. Trim strong, lights and GPS working. The lights and GPS were not connected and the bilge and livewell switches were turned off, so I don’t think there is a power drain on the battery.Any ideas? Bad battery cell?

When mine did that, it was a corroded battery cable connection on the motor.

Put a wire brush to the cables and battery then hook them back up. Try easiest first.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

try cleaning connections first
just because the cables look good, doesnt mean they look good on the inside
