Battery Question

I currently have a Group 27 battery for my trolling motor and it has lasted 3 years. I was curious if a Group 29 would be any more beneficial as it is only a few bucks more?

Thanks,

I wouldnt expect any more longevity out of it, just a longer amp hour draw (may last longer between charges). Probably not enough to notice. keep in mind location (space), you will need to change battery trays as well.

The capacity of the battery is in the contruction and the resulting specs, not the group size. There are some group-27 batteries that are much better than group 29’s or even 31’s from competing manufacturers. If you’re replacing a gp 27, consider a Exide Nautilus Marine or Stowaway. They make excellent gp 27 trolling motor batteries that are better than most larger batteries. Look at the specs: reserve mins and the amp hours (make sure you’re comparing them at the same amp draw, too).

If you look at the BCI group, you will see the CCA/MCA/& more importantly the reserve capacity increases. It is possible you will see a larger reserve capacity in some 27 series over 29 series; If you compare the groups within the same manufacturer it will increase. Support your local battery company Millenium Batteries; They are exellent batteries with the same standard warranty.

I agree that the Exide batteries were good ones. But, where in the world do you buy them anymore? I haven’t seen them around here for awhile.

Excuses? I’ve heard them all!

Good question and point. Boaters World had them (as Nautilus), and Walmart used to carry them, too (as Stowaway), but I wasn’t able to find one in town the last time I was looking for a battery either.

Within a given brand, the capacities generally increase with size, naturally, but what I was saying is that some brands have more capacity in their 27’s than other have in their larger batteries. Exide (Nautilus/Stowaway) is one of the brands that builds a battery with higher capacities in the smaller sizes than many others deliver in the larger sizes.

Deep Cycle???

Deka makes a pretty good battery. Santee Industrial Battery off of Ashley Phosphate road carries them.

smokey; do not knwo if they were d/cycle or not. just saw the batteries while i was in the store.

A lot of people are recommending the Sears Diehard Platinum AGM marine batteries.

Here is a good benchmark for you to use for group-27 batteries’ performance: 180 reserve minutes and 105 amp hours (at 20 amps). That’s why I buy the Exide products (and also the fact that they’ve lasted me a long time on multiple boats). I can tell you that batteries with those specs will last all day and more with a 24-v motor and a heavy boat in current. I can use mine all day, forget to charge them, and use them the next day.
